L'amour de Dieu

... Afin que l'amour dont Tu M'as aimé soit en eux, et que je sois en eux. Jean 17:26

Telles sont les dernières paroles du Sauveur à Ses disciples avant Sa crucifixion, aboutissement de cette Vie vécue et donnée pour nous amener à Dieu. Quelle révélation de Dieu Lui-même, de Ses pensées de Père céleste pour ceux qu'Il a donnés à Son Fils dans ce monde. Jean 17:2, 6, 9, 11, 12, 24. En terminant Sa prière à Son Père, le Seigneur fait encore cette déclaration suprême: "Je leur ai fait connaître Ton nom, et je le leur ferai connaître, afin que l'amour dont Tu M'as aimé soit en eux, et que je sois en eux."

Voilà qui dépasse notre compréhension humaine: l'amour du Père, l'amour qu'Il a pour Son Fils, est en nous. Personne ne pourra jamais sonder la profondeur de l'amour du Père pour le Fils; c'est la chose la plus merveilleuse du monde. Et c'est de cet amour qu'Il nous aime, nous, pécheurs perdus, rétrogrades ou chrétiens de fait. Il nous connaît parfaitement, mais Il nous aime malgré tout. Il est vrai que nous sommes en Christ, et Dieu nous voit à travers l'oeuvre accomplie de Son Fils; mais Il sait néanmoins ce que nous sommes, Il connaît notre nature déchue et coupable, nos capacités de ruses et de révoltes. Et cet amour se donne entièrement à chacun de nous, jusqu'à la fin, parfait en justice et parfait en grâce.

Combien il répond à nos besoins, cet amour du Père pour Son Fils! Si nous le recevions vraiment dans notre coeur, il apporterait la solution à tous nos problèmes, le remède à tous nos maux spirituels! Confessons-Lui notre souffrance de vivre sans cet amour, de le comprendre encore si mal, ouvrons-Lui notre coeur tout grand, en toute simplicité, pour qu'Il puisse y entrer. Le Père aimerait nous faire jouir de la plénitude de Son amour, de cet amour qui fond ce qui est dur, chasse ce qui est mal, corrige nos habitudes mauvaises, détend notre raideur et guérit même le coeur brisé. Il nous transformera et nous remplira de Ses richesses et de Sa joie.

Ecoutons Sa voix: "Père saint, garde en Ton Nom ceux que Tu M'as donnés... que l'amour dont Tu M'as aimé soit en eux, et que je sois en eux." Demandons-le-Lui tout simplement.

Serve Well With Joy

Serve the Lord with gladness. Psalm 100:2

For joy that will last, always put Christ first.

Nine years ago today a good friend went out for a lunchtime jog and never came back. Kurt De Haan, who was the managing editor of Our Daily Bread, died of a heart attack on that sunny Thursday. Some of us who worked with Kurt still keep mementos of him in our offices.

For instance, on one wall of my cubicle, I display the last memo I received from Kurt. It reminds me of his thoroughness as an editor—striving to represent God’s Word accurately and well. Another co-worker displays the last paper wad Kurt threw in her direction, reminding her of his eagerness to enjoy life.

Each time we talk about Kurt and how much we miss him, we discuss his combination of a quest for excellence mixed with an enjoyable personality. He worked hard and loved life. He strove to teach God’s Word with integrity while living his life with joy.

Remembering Kurt and his example is refreshing and challenging. It reminds us that others are watching us and can tell if we’re serving “the Lord with gladness” (Ps. 100:2), and if our love for Jesus is coming through in our good works (Eph. 2:10). Serve well. Serve with joy. Does that describe our work for the Savior?

Help me, dear Jesus, to live out the joy

and peace You’ve given to me. May those who work

with and know me see that joy. And may I always

stand for truth and righteousness.
