Un seul petit bémol

Ne vous mettez pas sous un joug mal assorti avec les incrédules ; car… quelle communion entre la lumière et les ténèbres… ou quelle part a le croyant avec l’incrédule ? 2 Corinthiens 6. 14, 15
 

Luc, un jeune chrétien, fait la connaissance d’une camarade d’études sympathique, Laura. Ils se découvrent des goûts communs, se lient d’amitié, et deviennent amoureux. Luc en parle à ses parents : “On est fait l’un pour l’autre ! Un seul petit bémol : elle n’est pas chrétienne. Mais ma foi l’intéresse, elle est très ouverte et me pose plein de questions. Elle a besoin de moi. Elle veut m’accompagner aux réunions chrétiennes. Elle se convertira au Christ, j’en suis sûr !”

Ses parents l’avertissent : Comment envisager une vie commune sans partager dès le départ ce qui est le plus important dans la vie d’un croyant, et qui va influencer ses choix ? Comment vivre ensemble avec des priorités et des intérêts différents ?

Mais rien ne peut dissuader Luc d’épouser Laura ! Un an après le mariage, Laura n’accompagne toujours pas Luc à l’assemblée chrétienne, et la foi ne l’intéresse plus. Elle a d’autres centres d’intérêt. Puis, Luc ne fréquente plus ses amis chrétiens. Finalement, sa Bible quitte sa table de chevet pour aller dans un tiroir.

Jeune ami, ne te berce pas d’illusions. Si tu es un vrai chrétien, tu appartiens à ton Sauveur : tu ne seras pas heureux avec un conjoint non-chrétien. Le plus souvent, c’est le non-croyant qui entraîne le chrétien loin de Dieu, et non l’inverse. Si la personne que tu aimes est le conjoint que Dieu te destine, il se chargera de l’attirer à lui et de le convertir, avant que tu t’engages, comme bien des chrétiens en ont fait l’heureuse expérience. Laisse à Dieu le soin de ton vrai bonheur !

Walking by a Blessing

If only you had paid attention to my commands. Isaiah 48:18

Today's Scripture & Insight:

In 1799, twelve-year-old Conrad Reed found a large, glittering rock in the stream that ran through his family’s small farm in North Carolina. He carried it home to show his father, a poor immigrant farmer. His father didn’t understand the rock’s potential value and used it as a doorstop. The family walked by it for years.

Eventually Conrad’s rock—actually a seventeen-pound gold nugget—caught the eye of a local jeweler. Soon the Reed family became wealthy, and their property became the site of the first major gold strike in the United States.

Sometimes we walk past a blessing, intent on our own plans and ways. After Israel was exiled to Babylon for disobeying God, He proclaimed freedom for them once again. But He also reminded them of what they’d missed. “I am the Lord your God,” He told them, “who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.” God then encouraged them to follow Him away from old ways into a new life: “Leave Babylon . . . ! Announce this with shouts of joy” (Isaiah 48:17–18, 20).

Leaving Babylon, perhaps now as much as then, means leaving sinful ways and “coming home” to a God who longs to do us good—if only we’ll obey and follow Him!
