Dieu seul est grand, mes frères

Poussé par la curiosité, le roi Louis XIV voulut entendre le célèbre prédicateur et évêque Massillon, dont les discours attiraient un nombre toujours croissant d’auditeurs. La prédication sérieuse de Massillon fit une forte impression sur le roi. Il le fit venir à Versailles et lui dit : “J’ai déjà entendu un grand nombre d’orateurs et généralement j’ai été content d’eux, mais comment se fait-il qu’après vous avoir entendu, je sois si mécontent de moi-même ?”

Ainsi ce roi bigot, et en même temps si coupable, avait été atteint dans sa conscience par le tranchant de “l’épée de l’Esprit, qui est la Parole de Dieu” (Éphésiens 6. 17). Celle-ci ne flatte personne, elle montre à l’homme, quelle que soit sa position sociale, ce qu’il est à la lumière de Dieu : un pécheur voué à la condamnation, qui ne peut être sauvé que par le sang de Jésus Christ. Louis XIV, impressionné par ce qu’il avait entendu, exprima son intention d’écouter prêcher Massillon au moins une fois par an. Mais le prédicateur ne reçut jamais d’autre invitation de sa part.

Une dernière fois pourtant Massillon eut à prendre la parole devant le roi. Son discours, dont le texte a été conservé, commençait ainsi : “Dieu seul est grand, mes frères…” Mais cette fois le roi Louis XIV appelé le Grand ne pouvait plus l’entendre ; il était couché dans son cercueil. C’était son oraison funèbre.

“Voici, c’est maintenant le temps favorable ; voici, c’est maintenant le jour du salut” (2 Corinthiens 6. 2).

Today's Scripture & Insight:

After I became a believer in Jesus, I shared the gospel with my mother. Instead of making a decision to trust Jesus, as I expected, she stopped speaking to me for a year. Her bad experiences with people who claimed to follow Jesus made her distrust believers in Christ. I prayed for her and reached out to her weekly. The Holy Spirit comforted me and continued working on my heart as my mom gave me the silent treatment. When she finally answered my phone call, I committed to loving her and sharing God’s truth with her whenever I had the opportunity. Months after our reconciliation, she said I’d changed. Almost a year later, she received Jesus as her Savior, and, as a result, our relationship deepened.

Believers in Jesus have access to the greatest gift given to humanity—Christ. The apostle Paul says we’re to “spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere” (2 Corinthians 2:14). He refers to those who share the gospel as “the pleasing aroma of Christ” to those who believe, but acknowledges we reek of death to those who reject Jesus (vv. 15–16).

After we receive Christ as our Savior, we have the privilege of using our limited time on earth to spread His life-changing truth while loving others. Even during our hardest and loneliest moments, we can trust He’ll provide what we need. No matter what the personal cost, God’s good news is always worth sharing.
