Deux frères martyrs

Haik H., un Arménien de 22 ans, décide de consacrer sa vie au service des chrétiens. En 1980, il est actif parmi les croyants à Téhéran, où il est interdit d’évangéliser les musulmans, mais Haik refuse de céder aux pressions : “Qu’ils nous jettent en prison ou nous fassent mourir pour notre foi, nous ne nous plierons pas à ces exigences”.

Mehdi D. a été l’un des nombreux chrétiens d’arrière-plan musulman. En 1983, il est arrêté et jeté en prison pour dix ans. Là, on veut le forcer à renier sa foi, mais Mehdi peut dire : “Non seulement je suis heureux d’être en prison pour l’honneur de son saint Nom, mais en plus je suis prêt à donner ma vie pour Jésus, mon Seigneur”. En 1993, dans un tribunal secret, Mehdi est condamné à mort pour avoir renié l’islam. Mais Haik apprend sa condamnation et la dénonce publiquement. La communauté internationale s’empare de l’affaire, et le 16 janvier 1994, Mehdi est libéré.

Trois jours plus tard, Haik est kidnappé en pleine rue à Téhéran. Son corps sera retrouvé sans vie…

Lors de l’inhumation, Mehdi, en larmes, s’adresse ainsi à la foule : “Lorsque notre frère Haik a été tué, je savais que c’était moi qui aurais dû mourir, pas lui”.

Six mois plus tard, Mehdi rejoint son frère Haik : son corps poignardé est retrouvé dans un parc de Téhéran…

Ces deux frères martyrs, l’un d’origine arménienne, l’autre, musulmane, ont été des modèles de foi qui ont encouragé bien des chrétiens iraniens.

“Souvenez-vous de vos conducteurs qui vous ont annoncé la parole de Dieu…, imitez leur foi” (Hébreux 13. 7).

Hope Cuts through Storms

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. Psalm 107:29

Today's Scripture & Insight:

In the spring of 2021, several storm-chasers recorded videos and took photos of a rainbow next to a tornado in Texas. In one video, long stalks of wheat in a field bent under the power of the whirling winds. A brilliant rainbow cut across the gray skyline and arched toward the twister. Bystanders in another video stood on the side of the road and watched the symbol of hope standing firm beside the twisting funnel-shaped cloud.

In Psalm 107, the psalmist offers hope and encourages us to turn to God during difficult times. He describes some who were in the middle of a storm, “at their wits’ end” (v. 27). “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress” (v. 28).

God understands His children will sometimes struggle to feel hopeful when life feels like a storm. We need reminders of His faithfulness, especially when the horizon looks dark and tumultuous.

Whether our storms come as substantial obstacles in our lives, as emotional turmoil, or as mental stress, God can still our storms “to a whisper” and guide us to a place of refuge (vv. 29–30). Though we may not experience relief in our preferred way or time, we can trust God to keep the promises He’s given in Scripture. His enduring hope will cut through any storm.
