Tu as bien fait

Le Seigneur… mettra en lumière ce qui est caché dans les ténèbres, et manifestera les intentions des cœurs ; et alors, pour chacun, l’approbation viendra de Dieu. 1 Corinthiens 4. 5
 

– Le roi David souhaitait bâtir un temple magnifique pour son Dieu. Mais c’est à son fils Salomon, et non à lui, que Dieu confie le soin de réaliser ce projet. Pourtant, l’intention de David, inspirée par son amour pour Dieu, a plu à l’Éternel, qui lui dit : “Tu as bien fait de l’avoir eu à cœur” (1 Rois 8. 18).

– Bien plus tard, quelques femmes ont assisté à la mise au tombeau de Jésus. Mais c’est le sabbat et, conformément à la loi, elles ne doivent pas se déplacer. Dès la fin du sabbat, elles vont au tombeau pour embaumer le corps de Jésus.

Mais le tombeau est vide, Jésus est ressuscité. C’est trop tard… La démarche de ces femmes attachées au Seigneur a-t-elle été inutile pour autant ? Non ! Elles ont ainsi pu annoncer sa résurrection aux disciples. Leur projet plein d’attention a été utile, même s’il n’a pas abouti.

– Dans la vie chrétienne, il arrive que certains projets qui nous tiennent à cœur semblent être des échecs : un long trajet pour rendre visite à un ami hospitalisé, qui n’est pas dans sa chambre, une invitation annulée à la dernière minute…

Nous sommes parfois perplexes. Avons-nous dépensé notre temps et notre énergie pour rien ? Nous avons pu nous tromper, mais le motif qui nous a fait agir n’a pas échappé à Celui qui sonde les cœurs et les pensées. Une démarche apparemment inutile a sa valeur pour celui qui apprécie, non pas le résultat visible, mais les motifs intérieurs. “L’Éternel ne regarde pas ce à quoi l’homme regarde, car l’homme regarde à l’apparence extérieure, et l’Éternel regarde au cœur” (1 Samuel 16. 7).

Caring for Those in Need

I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land. Deuteronomy 15:11

Jesus, help me to find ways I can help those around me. Please give me a generous heart.

Today's Scripture & Insight:

Elvis Summers answered the door to find Smokey, a frail woman who stopped by regularly to ask for empty cans to return for cash. This money was her primary source of income. Elvis got an idea. “Could you show me where you sleep?” he asked. Smokey led him to a narrow patch of dirt about two feet wide next to a house. Moved by compassion, Summers built her a “tiny house”—a simple shelter that provided space for her to sleep safely. Summers ran with the idea. He started a GoFundMe page and teamed with local churches to provide land to build more shelters for others who were homeless.

Throughout the Bible, God’s people are reminded to care for those in need. When God spoke through Moses to prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land, He encouraged them to “be openhanded and freely lend [to the poor] whatever they need” (Deuteronomy 15:8). This passage also noted that “there will always be poor people in the land” (v. 11). We don’t have to go far to see this is true. As God compassionately called the Israelites “to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites” (v. 11), we too can find ways to help those in need.

Everyone needs food, shelter, and water. Even if we don’t have much, may God guide us to use what we do have to help others. Whether it’s sharing a sandwich or a warm winter coat, small things can make a big difference!
