Test de la foi

Dans la Bible, la tentation est souvent une mise à l’épreuve du croyant. Elle survient chaque fois que sa foi est confrontée à un choix entre deux chemins : un chemin vers Dieu et un autre qui nous en éloignerait. La tentation peut venir aussi dans toute situation où nos convoitises diverses risquent d’être engagées, mais également si nous désirons réaliser nous-mêmes une promesse de Dieu. Jacob a ainsi menti à son père pour obtenir la bénédiction qui lui était promise (Genèse 27).

La tentation est d’abord, pour le croyant, une mise à l’épreuve, un test, de sa foi. Ainsi, pour être victorieux de la tentation, il faut que notre foi soit fortifiée, notre confiance en Dieu agrandie.

Dans la tentation, le secret est de nous appuyer sur ce que Dieu a dit. Jésus a été victorieux des tentations du diable, en citant l’Écriture : “Il est écrit” (Luc 4. 4). L’autre grande ressource est la prière : “Priez, afin que vous n’entriez pas en tentation”, a dit Jésus (Luc 22. 46).

Dieu ne tente personne, dans le sens que ce n’est jamais lui qui nous pousse à pécher, mais il arrive qu’il teste notre foi pour la fortifier. Notre vie ne peut pas échapper au test de la tentation, car nous en avons souvent besoin pour progresser.

Ne perdons pas courage dans ces moments-là, mais recherchons le Seigneur, en nous appuyant sur ses promesses et sur sa Parole. Il est fidèle, il viendra nous secourir.

Trusting God in Opposition

God, thank You for loving me so generously. Help me to follow You with joy even in the face of opposition.

Today's Scripture & Insight:

Raised in a tribe in the Philippines opposed to belief in Christ, Esther received salvation through Jesus after an aunt prayed for her during Esther’s battle with a life-threatening illness. Today, Esther leads Bible studies in her local community in spite of threats of violence and even death. She serves joyfully, saying, “I can’t stop telling people about Jesus because I’ve experienced the power, love, goodness, and faithfulness of God in my life.”

Serving God in the face of opposition is a reality for many today just as it was for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three young Israelites living in captivity in Babylon. In the book of Daniel, we learn that they refused to pray to a large golden image of King Nebuchadnezzar even when threatened with death. The men testified that God was capable of protecting them, but they chose to serve Him “even if” He didn’t rescue them (Daniel 3:18). When they were thrown into the fire, God actually joined them in their suffering (v. 25). To everyone’s amazement, they survived without even “a hair of their heads singed” (v. 27).

If we face suffering or persecution for an act of faith, ancient and modern examples remind us that God’s Spirit is present with us to strengthen and sustain us when we choose to obey Him, “even if” things turn out differently than we hope.
