Sauvés… mais perdus

Ces faits se déroulent au 19e siècle. Un navire à vapeur se dirige vers New York quand le feu se déclare dans la soute à charbon. Il y a risque d’explosion en raison de la nature de la cargaison. Le capitaine avertit son équipage : “Messieurs, nous sommes en péril, au bord de l’éternité et abandonnés à la miséricorde de Dieu”. Il témoigne de sa foi et recommande à chacun de se mettre en règle avec Dieu.

Terrifiés, ces hommes habitués à se moquer de Dieu se mettent à prier. Le capitaine a soudain l’idée d’inonder la soute pour empêcher l’explosion. Le péril écarté, il en avertit les officiers. Mais ils se mettent à rire de leur peur, oubliant de remercier Dieu qui les a sauvés d’une mort certaine. Pendant qu’ils plaisantent, le capitaine est rapidement appelé car les vannes ne veulent plus se fermer : le navire se remplit et menace de couler. Le capitaine avertit de nouveau l’équipage. Épouvantés, ces hommes se mettent de nouveau à prier. Enfin, on réussit à fermer les vannes et tout danger est bientôt écarté. Tous retournent à leurs rires, indifférents…

Vous-même, vous avez peut-être déjà été au bord de l’éternité, vous avez frôlé la mort. Allez-vous dire : je prierai à l’approche de ce moment ultime ? Aurez-vous le temps et la force de le faire ? Jésus Christ seul peut vous sauver de la mort éternelle, il est mort à votre place pour cela. Recevez sa grâce. Il vous l’offre gratuitement aujourd’hui pour vous pardonner de vos péchés. Jésus vous aime, il vous veut pour son ciel. N’attendez pas, demain il sera peut-être trop tard.

Mercy and Grace

[Josiah] began to seek the God of his father David. 2 Chronicles 34:3

Heavenly Father, I praise You for never changing. Your mercies are “new every morning!” (Lamentations 3:23). Help me to look forward to what You have for me today.

Today's Scripture & Insight : 2 Chronicles 34:1–8

A stately sunflower stood on its own in the center of a lonely stretch of national highway, just a few feet from the fast lane. As I drove past, I wondered how it had grown there with no other sunflowers visible for miles. Only God could create a plant so hardy it could thrive so close to the roadway in the gray gravel lining the median. There it was, thriving, swaying gently in the breeze and cheerfully greeting travelers as they hurried by.

The Old Testament tells the story of a faithful king of Judah who also showed up unexpectedly. His father and grandfather had enthusiastically served other gods; but after Josiah had been in power for eight years, “while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David” (2 Chronicles 34:3). He sent workmen to “repair the temple of the Lord” (v. 8), and as they did they discovered the Book of the Law (the first five books of the Old Testament; v. 14). God then inspired Josiah to lead the entire nation of Judah to return to the faith of their ancestors, and they served the Lord “as long as [Josiah] lived” (v. 33).

Our God is the master of unanticipated mercies. He’s able to cause great good to spring up unexpectedly out of the hard gravel of life’s most unfavorable circumstances. Watch Him closely. He may do it again today.
