Je ne lui demande plus d’argent

Ce matin on sonne à ma porte. Un monsieur me propose ses services pour l’entretien du jardin. Quelque chose dans son attitude m’amène à engager la conversation. Nous découvrons que nous sommes chrétiens l’un et l’autre. Mon visiteur me raconte qu’il s’est converti il y a quelque temps, et que sa vie en a été transformée. Trouver du travail est une préoccupation de chaque jour pour lui. Mais maintenant, il vit cela avec son Dieu. Avant de me quitter, il ajoute : “Maintenant, je ne demande plus à Dieu de me donner de l’argent, je lui demande de m’ôter le souci”.

Dans sa simplicité, cette remarque me touche et me revient souvent en mémoire. Elle est bien en accord avec l’enseignement de Jésus à ses disciples : “Ne soyez pas en souci pour votre vie, de ce que vous mangerez et de ce que vous boirez… Qui d’entre vous, par le souci qu’il se donne, peut ajouter une coudée à sa taille ? Et pourquoi êtes-vous en souci du vêtement ? … Ne soyez donc pas en souci, en disant : Que mangerons-nous ? ou que boirons-nous ? ou de quoi serons-nous habillés ? … Ne soyez donc pas en souci pour le lendemain… : à chaque jour suffit sa peine” (Matthieu 6. 25-34).

Dieu sait que nous avons besoin de ces choses matérielles, et il est naturel de s’en préoccuper. Ce chrétien se confiait en Dieu, il ne restait pas inactif pour autant : il allait de porte en porte pour trouver du travail. Mais il avait appris ce que nous avons souvent de la peine à faire : se décharger sur Dieu du souci qu’occasionnent ces choses matérielles.

Dwelling in Our Hearts

I pray that . . . he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Ephesians 3:16–17

God, You’re not far off, but are close to me. May I delight in Your love and share it with others.

Today's Scripture & Insight : Ephesians 3:14–21

Sometimes the words of children can jolt us into a deeper understanding of God’s truth. One evening when my daughter was young, I told her about one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith—that God through His Son and Spirit dwells in His children. As I tucked her into bed, I said that Jesus was with her and in her. “He’s in my tummy?” she asked. “Well, you haven’t swallowed Him,” I replied. “But He’s right there with you.”

My daughter’s literal translation of Jesus being “in her tummy” made me stop and consider how when I asked Jesus to be my Savior, He came and took residence within me.

The apostle Paul referred to this mystery when he prayed that the Holy Spirit would strengthen the believers in Ephesus so that Christ would “dwell in [their] hearts through faith” (Ephesians 3:17). With Jesus living within, they could grasp how deeply He loved them. Fueled by this love, they would mature in their faith and love others with humility and gentleness while speaking the truth in love (4:2, 25).

Jesus dwelling inside His followers means that His love never leaves those who’ve welcomed Him into their lives. His love that surpasses knowledge (3:19) roots us to Him, helping us to understand how deeply He loves us.

Words written for children can say it best: “Yes, Jesus loves me!”
