Avant la fondation du monde (3)

[Dieu] nous a élus en [Jésus Christ] avant la fondation du monde, pour que nous soyons saints et irréprochables devant lui en amour. Éphésiens 1. 4

Jésus… peut sauver entièrement ceux qui s’approchent de Dieu par lui. Hébreux 7. 22, 25

Avant la fondation du monde, Dieu le Père aimait son Fils Jésus Christ. Il l’avait choisi pour être son Agneau qui enlève le péché du monde. Nous lisons enfin que :
- Les croyants ont été élus (choisis) en Christ.

Dans ses plans, Dieu désirait que des hommes soient sauvés par le sacrifice de Jésus Christ. Il les considérait comme choisis avant même qu’ils existent. Ce choix (ou cette “élection”) est un mystère, que l’homme ne peut pas élucider. Dieu, qui est souverain (1 Timothée 6. 15 ; Job 33. 13), sait lui seul concilier le contenu de ses plans éternels, son projet, et sa réalisation dans le temps, sur la terre. Dans sa souveraineté et dans son amour, Dieu a choisi de sauver les humains. Il a sacrifié son Fils, l’Agneau, préconnu avant la fondation du monde, pour ôter leurs péchés. Et c’est par la foi en lui que chacun est sauvé.

Ces croyants “élus en Christ”, Dieu les voyait à l’avance intimement associés à son Fils. Cette “élection”, que la Bible affirme, n’exclut en rien la responsabilité des hommes de croire que Christ est mort pour eux. Dieu offre alors à chacun sa grâce sans distinction. Dieu “veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés” (1 Timothée 2. 4). Personne ne peut refuser d’être sauvé en prétendant qu’il n’est pas élu. Celui qui accepte le salut découvre alors qu’il est élu.

Ainsi, avant la fondation du monde :
- Un amour éternel unissait le Père et son Fils Jésus.

- Un Agneau, dans la personne du Fils bien-aimé de Dieu, était mis à part, choisi pour ôter le péché du monde.

- Les croyants étaient élus en Christ.

Milk Comes First

Today's Scripture & Insight : Hebrews 5:11–6:2

In the seventh century, what is now called the United Kingdom was many kingdoms often at war. When one king, Oswald of Northumbria, became a believer in Jesus, he called for a missionary to bring the gospel to his region. A man named Corman was sent, but things didn’t go well. Finding the English “stubborn,” “barbarous,” and uninterested in his preaching, he returned home frustrated.

“I am of the opinion,” a monk named Aidan told Corman, “that you were more severe to your unlearned hearers than you ought to have been.” Instead of giving the Northumbrians “the milk of more easy doctrine,” Corman had given them teaching they couldn’t yet grasp. Aidan went to Northumbria, adapted his preaching to the people’s understanding, and thousands became believers in Jesus.

Aidan got this sensitive approach to mission from Scripture. “I gave you milk, not solid food,” Paul told the Corinthians, “for you were not yet ready for it” (1 Corinthians 3:2). Before right living can be expected from people, Hebrews says, basic teaching about Jesus, repentance, and baptism must be grasped (Hebrews 5:13–6:2). While maturity should follow (5:14), let’s not miss the order. Milk comes before meat. People can’t obey teaching they don’t understand.

The faith of the Northumbrians ultimately spread to the rest of the country and beyond. Like Aidan, when sharing the gospel with others, we meet people where they are.
