Je voudrais voir Dieu avec un visage

Personne n’a jamais vu Dieu ; le Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père, lui, l’a fait connaître. Jean 1. 18

Une petite fille, en parlant de Dieu, insistait : “Moi, je voudrais bien le voir. Je voudrais voir Dieu comme quelqu’un avec un visage”. Ce qu’elle exprimait là, c’est tout simplement le désir murmuré ou énoncé par quantité d’humains depuis toujours. La Bible précise bien qu’aucun homme n’a jamais vu Dieu, ni ne pourra le voir, au sens littéral (Exode 33. 20 ; Jean 1. 18), car “Dieu est esprit” (Jean 4. 24 ; 1 Timothée 1. 17).

À Moïse qui lui demandait la permission de le voir, Dieu répond : “Je te mettrai dans la fente du rocher, et je te couvrirai de ma main jusqu’à ce que je sois passé ; puis je retirerai ma main, et tu me verras par derrière ; mais ma face (mon visage) ne se verra pas” (Exode 33. 22, 23).

Mais ce Dieu invisible à l’oeil humain, Être suprême, Créateur de toutes choses, a pu être vu sur la terre comme un homme : il a fait resplendir la connaissance de sa gloire sur le visage du Christ (2 Corinthiens 4. 6). Mystère impénétrable ! Un disciple de Jésus, Philippe, lui a dit : “Seigneur, montre-nous le Père, et cela nous suffit”. Jésus lui a répondu : “Celui qui m’a vu, a vu le Père… Ne crois-tu pas que moi je suis dans le Père, et que le Père est en moi ?” (Jean 14. 8-10).

Voici la bonne nouvelle : en Jésus, on a pu voir Dieu comme “quelqu’un avec un visage”. Et Dieu a pris soin de nous donner quatre évangiles, autant de témoignages précis et détaillés dans lesquels nous pouvons voir vivre Jésus, le Fils de Dieu, le Sauveur.

Most Americans knew little about Alexander Hamilton—until 2015, when Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote his hit musical Hamilton. Now schoolchildren know Hamilton’s story by heart. They sing it to each other on the bus and at recess. He’s their favorite founding father.

God knows the power of music, and He told Moses to “write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it” (Deuteronomy 31:19). God knew that long after Moses was gone, when He had brought Israel into the Promised Land, they would rebel and worship other gods. So He told Moses, “This song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants” (v. 21).

Songs are nearly impossible to forget, so it’s wise to be selective about what we sing. Some songs are just for fun, and that’s fine, but we benefit from songs that boast in Jesus and encourage our faith. One of the ways we “[make] the most of every opportunity” is when we speak “to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.” So “sing and make music from your heart to the Lord” (see Ephesians 5:15–19).

Songs can be an indicator of the direction of our heart. Do the words make much of Jesus? Do we sing them wholeheartedly? What we sing will influence what we believe, so choose wisely and sing loudly.
