Lettres aux assemblées : Sardes (5)

(Jésus a dit : ) Souviens-toi donc comment tu as reçu et entendu ; garde-le, et repens-toi. Mais si tu ne veilles pas, je viendrai sur toi comme un voleur, et tu ne sauras pas à quelle heure je viendrai sur toi. Apocalypse 3. 3

Dans l'antiquité, Sardes était réputée imprenable. Sa citadelle construite sur un contrefort rocheux défiait tout assaut. Et pourtant, la cité a été prise deux fois, d'abord par Cyrus, puis par Alexandre, et cela par le seul point faible de sa défense, un sentier caché dans les rochers. Les habitants ne s'y attendaient pas…

L'avertissement du Seigneur : “Sois vigilant” avait donc une résonance très forte pour les chrétiens à Sardes. Ils étaient plongés dans un sommeil spirituel qui ressemblait à la mort, sans relation vraie avec Dieu, même s'ils se croyaient peut-être très actifs. Ils avaient oublié que le Seigneur peut venir, pour ceux qui ne l'attendent pas, “comme un voleur dans la nuit”.

Le mal de Sardes est celui qui nous guette lorsque nous nous contentons de formes. L'ennemi saura alors éloigner nos cœurs de Dieu en occupant nos esprits de toutes sortes de manières. Nous aurons peut-être une vie chrétienne acceptable aux yeux des autres, mais elle sera superficielle, sans lien vivant avec Jésus. Que dit-il à ces chrétiens de Sardes ? “Souviens-toi comment tu as reçu.” Il nous invite à revenir à la Parole de Dieu, à la laisser pénétrer dans nos cœurs ; à nous souvenir combien sa bonté a été grande dans ses délivrances et ses réponses ; à lui dire combien notre éloignement est fautif et l'a déshonoré. Ne nous trompons pas sur notre état réel devant Dieu. Ne comptons pas sur nos connaissances bibliques ou nos traditions, mais sur Jésus seul. “Bienheureux sont ces esclaves que le maître, quand il viendra, trouvera en train de veiller” (Luc 12. 37).

Who can you talk to today about their need for an eternal home and the assurance that would bring them?

Recently a friend who sold homes for a living died of cancer. As my wife and I reminisced about Patsy, Sue recalled that many years ago Patsy had led a man to faith in Jesus and he became a good friend of ours.

How encouraging to recall that Patsy not only helped families find homes to live in here in our community, but she also helped others make sure they had an eternal home.

As Jesus prepared to go to the cross for us, He showed a keen interest in our eternal accommodations. He told His disciples, “I go to prepare a place for you” and reminded them that there would be plenty of room in His Father’s house for all who trusted Him (John 14:2 nkjv).

We love to have a nice home in this life—a special place for our family to eat, sleep, and enjoy each other’s company. But think of how amazing it will be when we step into the next life and discover that God has taken care of our eternal accommodations. Praise God for giving us life “to the full” (John 10:10), including His presence with us now and our presence with Him later in the place He is preparing for us (14:3).

Thinking of what God has in store for those who trust Jesus can challenge us to do as Patsy did and introduce others to Him.  

Lord, while we anticipate the home You’re preparing for us, may we tell others they too can enjoy forever the home You’re preparing for all who believe in Jesus.
