Redoutable inconscience

Dieu a fixé un jour où il doit juger avec justice la terre habitée. Actes 17. 31

Prépare-toi… à rencontrer ton Dieu. Amos 4. 12
 

Nous roulons à vive allure. Devant nous, une voiture transporte sur son toit plusieurs vélos qui semblent mal attachés. Nos enfants s'en amusent. Soudain, un des vélos se détache, fait une pirouette et vient s'abattre sur le goudron dans un jaillissement d'étincelles. Un cri, un coup de volant, mais nous passons sains et saufs. Malheureusement, derrière nous, c'est le bruit d'un freinage, puis celui d'un accrochage, et c'est le carambolage…

Après un arrêt – les dégâts ne sont que matériels – nous repartons. Mais plus un mot dans la voiture. Les enfants ont peur car ils ont maintenant compris le danger de la route. Celui-ci est toujours le même, il n'a pas augmenté, mais eux en ont pris conscience et c'est leur attitude qui a changé.

N'en est-il pas de même dans le domaine spirituel? Beaucoup vont tranquillement leur chemin, non parce qu'ils sont en sécurité, mais parce qu'ils sont inconscients du danger. Lequel? Celui d'avoir à encourir le jugement de Dieu et sa condamnation. C'est une réalité solennelle. Encore faut-il la regarder en face… et être saisi d'une juste crainte!

Mais il y a autre chose dont il faut être conscient, c'est l'amour de Dieu pour tous les hommes. Un amour profond, immense, capable de répondre à toute la misère humaine. Un amour qui promet le pardon et qui fait grâce à celui qui met sa confiance en Jésus Christ et en son sacrifice sur la croix.

Heart Hunger

I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

Jesus alone offers the only bread that truly satisfies.

Riding along with my husband on some errands, I scrolled through emails on my phone and was surprised at an incoming advertisement for a local donut shop, a shop we had just passed on the right side of the street. Suddenly my stomach growled with hunger. I marveled at how technology allows vendors to woo us into their establishments.

As I clicked off my email, I mused over God’s constant yearning to draw me closer. He always knows where I am and longs to influence my choices. I wondered, Does my heart growl in desire for Him the way my stomach did over the idea of a donut?

In John 6, following the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, the disciples eagerly ask Jesus to always give them “the bread that . . . gives life to the world” (vv. 33–34). Jesus responds in verse 35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” How amazing that a relationship with Jesus can provide constant nourishment in our everyday lives!

The donut shop’s advertisement targeted my body’s craving, but God’s continuous knowledge of my heart’s condition invites me to recognize my ongoing need for Him and to receive the sustenance only He can provide.

Dear God, remind me of my need for Your daily bread of presence.
