La Bible, patrimoine de l'humanité

Aujourd'hui certains considèrent la Bible comme un livre démodé. Cependant d'autres reconnaissent en elle un livre exceptionnel. En février 2010, à Paris, une exposition – “La Bible, patrimoine de l'humanité” – a été organisée par l'Alliance Biblique Française. Pourquoi donner à la Bible ce qualificatif? Le patrimoine est “l'héritage du passé dont nous profitons aujourd'hui et que nous transmettons aux générations à venir”. La Bible remplit ces critères. Bien des découvertes archéologiques attestent l'authenticité de faits historiques cités dans la Bible. Sur le plan artistique, elle a été une source d'inspiration pour de nombreux peintres, sculpteurs, écrivains, musiciens.

Mais l'expression “patrimoine de l'humanité” évoque pour beaucoup l'admiration du travail de ceux qui l'ont construit. Or la Bible a une autorité morale qui s'impose à toute conscience d'homme, même s'il s'y oppose. Et si elle a cette autorité, c'est qu'elle n'est pas le résultat du travail des hommes. Elle est la Parole de Dieu. Elle répond aux questions essentielles: Qui suis-je? D'où est-ce que je viens? Où est-ce que je vais?

Quelle place donnons-nous à la lecture de ce Livre unique?

“Toute Écriture est inspirée de Dieu, et utile pour enseigner, pour convaincre, pour corriger, pour instruire dans la justice” (2 Timothée 3. 16).

Do We Have To?

Prayer is an intimate conversation with our God.

Joie started the children’s program with prayer, then sang with the kids. Six-year-old Emmanuel squirmed in his seat when she prayed again after introducing Aaron, the teacher. Then Aaron began and ended his talk with prayer. Emmanuel complained: “That’s four prayers! I can’t sit still that long!”

If you think Emmanuel’s challenge is difficult, look at 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray continually” or always be in a spirit of prayer. Even some of us adults can find prayer to be boring. Maybe that’s because we don’t know what to say or don’t understand that prayer is a conversation with our Father.
May we grow in our intimacy with God so that we will want to spend more time with Him.

Back in the seventeenth century, François Fénelon wrote some words about prayer that have helped me: “Tell God all that is in your heart, as one unloads one’s heart, its pleasures and its pains, to a dear friend. Tell Him your troubles, that He may comfort you; tell Him your joys, that He may sober them; tell Him your longings, that He may purify them.” He continued, “Talk to Him of your temptations, that He may shield you from them: show Him the wounds of your heart, that He may heal them . . . . If you thus pour out all your weaknesses, needs, troubles, there will be no lack of what to say.”

May we grow in our intimacy with God so that we will want to spend more time with Him.
