Il y a dans la société beaucoup de gens qui ne se font pas entendre. Comme ils ne font pas de bruit, on ne se préoccupe guère de leur opinion ou de leurs aspirations. Mais s'ils passent inaperçus des hommes, une chose est certaine: Dieu les voit et connaît les circonstances de leur vie: “L'Éternel regarde des cieux; il voit tous les fils des hommes” (Psaume 33. 13). “Tu connais mon sentier et mon coucher, et tu es au fait de toutes mes voies” (Psaume 139. 3). “Qu'on fasse tort à un homme,… le Seigneur ne le voit-il pas?” (Lamentations de Jérémie 3. 36).

Dans l'évangile, Zachée, un homme de petite taille, méprisé par ses contemporains à cause de son métier, est monté sur un arbre pour voir Jésus passer (Luc 19. 1-10). Et le Seigneur l'a vu, comme il a vu la veuve offrir au trésor du temple “tout ce qu'elle avait” (Marc 12. 44).

Vous sentez-vous isolé, ignoré, voire méprisé? Allez à Jésus! Il ne repousse personne: “Il n'y a pas de considération de personnes devant Dieu” (Romains 2. 11). “Il n'y a pas de partialité en lui” (Éphésiens 6. 9).

Quels que soient nos origines, notre couleur de peau, notre pays, notre position sociale, notre profession, Dieu déclare que nous sommes tous pécheurs, “il n'y a pas de différence” (Romains 3. 23). Et, chose merveilleuse, il offre son pardon à tous par l'œuvre de Jésus à la croix. Il nous dit: “Celui qui vient à moi, je ne le mettrai pas dehors” (Jean 6. 37). Dès lors, rien “ne pourra nous séparer de l'amour de Dieu, qui est dans le Christ Jésus notre Seigneur” (Romains 8. 39).

Madagascar’s National Road 5 offers the beauty of a white sand coastline, palm forests, and the Indian Ocean. Its 125 miles of two-track road, bare rock, sand, and mud, however, have given it a reputation for being one of the worst roads in the world. Tourists looking for breathtaking views are advised to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, an experienced driver, and an onboard mechanic.

John the Baptist came to announce the good news of the coming Messiah to those traveling on rough roads and through barren landscape. Repeating the words of the prophet Isaiah written centuries earlier, he urged curious crowds to “prepare the way for the Lord” and to “make straight paths for him” (Luke 3:4–5; Isa. 40:3)

John knew that if the people of Jerusalem were going to be ready to welcome their long-awaited Messiah their hearts needed to change. Mountains of religious pride would need to come down. Those in the valley of despair because of their broken lives would need to be lifted up.

Neither could be done by human effort alone. Those who refused to respond to the Spirit of God by accepting John’s baptism of repentance failed to recognize their Messiah when He came (Luke 7:29–30). Yet those who saw their need for change discovered in Jesus the goodness and wonder of God.

Father in heaven, we need You to do in us what we cannot do for ourselves. Please remove any mountain of pride or valley of despair that would keep us from welcoming You into our lives.
