Dans le petit village du Vaucluse où j'ai pris ma retraite, habite un prêtre très âgé. Avec lui, j'ai souvent des conversations édifiantes sur l'évangile et sur notre commun Sauveur, bien qu'il soit très sourd.

Notre vallée est exposée, surtout la nuit, à de violents orages. Au cours de l'un d'eux, particulièrement impressionnant, de véritables trombes d'eau s'étaient déversées en amont du village.

Selon son habitude, mon ami le prêtre s'était levé vers cinq heures du matin pour prier. Pendant qu'il était à genoux, il lui sembla percevoir un appel au secours. Il s'habilla et se rendit vite chez un voisin pour le réveiller et lui dire qu'il avait entendu un appel. Peu convaincu, mais n'osant refuser de l'aider, l'homme se décida à sortir sa voiture et même à se munir d'une corde, par acquit de conscience. Ils partirent, attentifs aux appels éventuels, mais le bruit de l'eau et du tonnerre dominait tout. Remontant la route qui suivait le torrent, le chauffeur constata tout à coup que la chaussée avait été emportée. Et là, dans l'eau boueuse qui remplaçait le bitume, ils aperçurent un homme accroché à la cabine de son camion. Le sauvetage put avoir lieu. L'homme était à peine sorti d'affaire que le camion partit à la dérive. C'est l'appel de cet homme que le vieillard en prière avait entendu.

Dieu fait encore des miracles: “Il fait entendre les sourds et parler les muets” (Marc 7. 37), et il écoute la prière de l'homme pieux (Psaume 32. 6).

Access to God’s throne is always open.

Jenny’s house is situated on a little country lane, which is often used in rush hour by drivers who want to avoid the nearby main road and traffic lights. A few weeks ago workmen arrived to repair the badly damaged road surface, bringing with them large barriers and “No Entry” signs. “I was really worried at first,” said Jenny, “thinking that I would be unable to get my car out until the road work was finished. But then I went to look at the signs more closely and realized that they said ‘No Entry: Access for Residents Only.’ No detours or barriers for me. I had the right to go in and out whenever I liked because I lived there. I felt very special!”

In the Old Testament, access to God in the tabernacle and the temple was strictly limited. Only the high priest could go in through the curtain and offer sacrifices in the Most Holy Place, and then only once a year (Lev. 16:2-20; Heb. 9:25-26). But at the very moment Jesus died, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, showing that the barrier between man and God was destroyed forever (Mark 15:38).

Because of Christ's sacrifice, all who love and follow Him can come into His presence.

Lord, thank You for paying such a price to enable me to have unrestricted entry into Your presence!
