L'arche de Noé

Noé entra dans l'arche… à cause des eaux du déluge… Et l'Éternel ferma l'arche sur lui. Genèse 7. 7, 16

Le premier livre de la Bible, la Genèse, nous raconte l'histoire de Noé: cet homme croyait en Dieu et désirait lui obéir. Mais “la terre était corrompue devant Dieu, et la terre était pleine de violence” (Genèse 6. 11). Les concitoyens de Noé vivaient selon leurs pensées de méchanceté. Alors Dieu décida de les détruire.

Mais avant cela, il fit preuve de beaucoup de patience: il demanda à Noé de construire un grand bateau. Construite sur la terre ferme, l'arche aurait dû amener les voisins à s'interroger et les pousser à reconnaître leurs fautes. Pendant toute la construction, l'arrivée du jugement était annoncée. Le moment venu, Dieu invita Noé et sa famille à entrer dans l'arche, puis Dieu ferma lui-même la porte. Il se mit alors à pleuvoir jusqu'à ce que la terre soit submergée. Seules les personnes entrées dans l'arche ont survécu.

De la même manière aujourd'hui, le jugement se prépare pour tous les hommes. Il est imminent: la débauche morale et la violence l'attestent. Le juge est déjà nommé. C'est Jésus, l'homme qu'il a ressuscité d'entre les morts (Actes 17. 31). Mais Dieu a donné un moyen de salut à ceux qui veulent venir à lui et qui reconnaissent leur péché. Il s'agit aussi de son propre Fils Jésus Christ, venu sur la terre pour souffrir et mourir à notre place sur la croix. Tous ceux qui croient que Jésus est mort pour eux échapperont aux jugements, comme l'arche a protégé Noé et les siens du déluge.

Dieu a patienté encore jusqu'à maintenant pour vous. Ne vous laissez pas surprendre par le jugement, venez à Jésus aujourd'hui.

Strangers and Foreigners

God calls us to live by faith, believing that He will fulfill His promises.

I parked my bicycle, fingering my map of Cambridge for reassurance. Directions not being my strength, I knew I could easily get lost in this maze of roads bursting with historic buildings.

Life should have felt idyllic, for I had just married my Englishman and moved to the UK. But I felt adrift. When I kept my mouth closed I blended in, but when I spoke I immediately felt branded as an American tourist. I didn’t yet know what my role was, and I quickly realized that blending two stubborn people into one shared life was harder than I had anticipated.

By faith we press forward, knowing that God will lead and guide us.

I related to Abraham, who left all that he knew as he obeyed the Lord’s call to live as a foreigner and stranger in a new land (Gen. 12:1). He pressed through the cultural challenges while keeping faith in God, and 2,000 years later the writer to the Hebrews named him a hero (11:9). Like the other men and women listed in this chapter, Abraham lived by faith, longing for things promised, hoping and waiting for his heavenly home.

Perhaps you’ve always lived in the same town, but as Christ-followers we’re all foreigners and strangers on this earth. By faith we press forward, knowing that God will lead and guide us, and by faith we believe He will never leave nor abandon us. By faith we long for home.

Father God, I want to live by faith, believing Your promises and knowing that You welcome me into Your kingdom. Enlarge my faith, I pray.
