Pourquoi, Seigneur?

Pourquoi, ô Éternel! te tiens-tu loin, te caches-tu aux temps de la détresse? Psaume 10. 1

Pourquoi ne détournes-tu pas les yeux de moi, et ne me laisses-tu pas tranquille? Job 7. 19

Toi, Seigneur! tu es bon, prompt à pardonner, et grand en bonté envers tous ceux qui crient vers toi. Psaume 86. 5

Cette question, nous la posons souvent au Seigneur quand il nous fait traverser des jours difficiles, ou quand nous nous trouvons isolés, incompris…

“Pourquoi, Seigneur?” Tel a été le cri de plusieurs hommes de Dieu dont parle la Bible. Et cela nous console, nous dont la foi est souvent si faible. Dans les moments les plus durs, qui d'entre nous n'a pas eu l'impression que Dieu ne répondait pas, comme s'il nous avait oubliés ou n'entendait pas? Demandons-lui, dans ces moments-là, de ne pas perdre courage, d'attendre patiemment sa réponse, sans perdre confiance en lui, sans oublier combien il nous aime.

Demandons-lui aussi de transformer ces tristes “pourquoi” en “pour quoi”, c'est-à-dire “dans quel but”. Le Seigneur nous fera comprendre alors qu'il agit pour notre bien, pour le bien de chacun de ceux qu'il aime. Il nous montrera ce qu'il veut corriger dans nos pensées ou notre comportement, pour nous donner toujours plus d'intimité avec lui, et pour nous faire ressembler davantage à son Fils. Et même si nous ne réalisons pas toujours la raison de telle ou telle épreuve, l'explication nous sera donnée au ciel, lorsque l'histoire de notre vie sera comme projetée sous nos yeux à la lumière de la grâce de Dieu. Alors nous ne dirons plus: “pourquoi”, mais “merci”.

“À présent je connais en partie, mais alors je connaîtrai à fond comme aussi j'ai été connu” (1 Corinthiens 13. 12).

Amazing Love

I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. John 6:38

The birth of Christ brought God to man; the cross of Christ brings man to God.

Approaching the first Christmas after her husband died, our friend Davidene wrote a remarkable letter in which she pictured what it might have been like in heaven when Jesus was born on earth. “It was what God always knew would happen,” she wrote. “The three were one, and He had agreed to allow the fracturing of His precious unity for our sake. Heaven was left empty of God the Son.”

As Jesus taught and healed people on earth, He said, “I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. . . . For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:38,40).

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, it was the beginning of His mission on earth to demonstrate God’s love and give His life on the cross to free us from the penalty and power of sin.

“I cannot imagine actually choosing to let go of the one I loved, with whom I was one, for the sake of anyone else,” Davidene concluded. “But God did. He faced a house much emptier than mine, so that I could live in His house with Him forever.”

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” (John 3:16).

Father in heaven, we are in awe of Your amazing love for us. Thank You for giving Your only Son to save us from our sins.
