La fournaise

Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, dresse une statue d'or et demande à tout son peuple de l'adorer, comme si c'était un dieu. Mais trois jeunes Hébreux veulent obéir à leur Dieu. Ils connaissent son premier commandement: “Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant ma face. Tu ne te feras pas d'image taillée… Tu ne t'inclineras pas devant elles… car moi, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux” (Exode 20. 3-5). Ils décident donc de ne pas se prosterner devant la statue. Ils sont dénoncés et amenés devant le roi dont la colère éclate. Il leur laisse une dernière chance: s'ils se prosternent devant la statue, ils ne seront pas brûlés vifs. Mais les jeunes gens font confiance à leur Dieu, et répondent au roi: “Notre Dieu… peut nous délivrer de la fournaise de feu ardent, et il nous délivrera de ta main… nous n'adorerons pas la statue d'or” (Daniel 3. 17-18). Furieux, le roi ordonne qu'on jette les trois hommes liés dans le feu. Mais quelle surprise! Seuls leurs liens brûlent. Les trois Hébreux peuvent marcher librement au milieu du feu, et ils sont accompagnés d'une quatrième personne. C'est Dieu lui-même qui est là avec eux et les protège de la puissance du feu.

Le roi, frappé de stupeur, leur demande alors de sortir du feu. Et tous peuvent voir le miracle accompli par Dieu en faveur de ses fidèles témoins.

Dieu ne laisse jamais la foi sans réponse, même si certains sont morts en martyrs. Si l'épreuve arrive, appuyons-nous paisiblement sur Dieu. Il répondra.

Rooted

Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 2 Chronicles 24:2

The faith that continues to the end gives proof that it was genuine in the beginning.

Joash must have been confused and frightened when he was told about the evil deeds of his grandmother Athaliah. She had murdered his brothers to usurp the power of the throne in Judah. But baby Joash had been safely hidden away by his aunt and uncle for 6 years (2 Chron. 22:10-12). As he grew, he enjoyed the love and instruction of his caregivers. When Joash was only 7 years old, he was secretly crowned king and his grandmother was overthrown (23:12-15).

Young King Joash had a wise counselor by his side—his very own Uncle Jehoiada (chs. 22–25). Joash was one of the rare “good kings” of Judah, and while his uncle was alive he obeyed the Lord by doing right (24:2). But once his uncle was no longer there to teach and lead by example, Joash fell away and his life ended badly (24:15-25). It seems that the roots of his faith did not run very deep. He even began to worship idols. Perhaps Joash’s “faith” had been more his uncle’s than his own.

Others can teach us the principles of their faith, but each of us must come individually to a lasting and personal faith in Christ. For faith to be real, it must become our own. God will help us walk with Him and become rooted and established in the faith (Col. 2:6-7).
