Un poing levé

Vous qui étiez autrefois étrangers et ennemis quant à vos pensées, dans les mauvaises œuvres,… [Jésus] vous a toutefois maintenant réconciliés dans le corps de sa chair, par la mort. Colossiens 1. 21, 22
 

L'empereur Julien régna sur l'empire romain de 361 à 363. On l'appelle l'Apostat parce qu'il se détourna du christianisme pour retourner au paganisme. Renier son éducation chrétienne pour revenir à l'idolâtrie païenne, c'était en fait déclarer publiquement la guerre à Dieu. En 363, blessé à mort au cours d'une guerre, il aurait, dit-on, levé le poing vers le ciel en criant: “Tu as vaincu, Galiléen!” Il mourut ainsi en révolte contre Jésus Christ.

Vous êtes peut-être, vous aussi, en guerre contre Dieu, de façon plus ou moins avouée. Vous ne pouvez accepter le verdict de sa Parole qui déclare tout homme pécheur. Vous restez hostile à Dieu alors que son Fils Jésus Christ est venu en personne sur la terre dans le but de vous réconcilier avec lui.

Dieu est prêt à pardonner l'attitude la plus violente envers lui. Jésus n'a-t-il pas demandé à son Père d'étendre son pardon à ceux qui le crucifiaient?

Jusqu'à maintenant, vous éprouvez de l'amertume contre Dieu. Si vous acceptez de vous incliner devant lui, de rentrer ce “poing de la révolte”, de faire taire dans vos pensées les sentiments de rébellion, immédiatement celui que vous haïssez vous apparaîtra comme ce qu'il est en réalité: le Dieu de paix, qui donne une paix complète et définitive à celui qui s'approche de lui. Cette paix a été faite par Jésus crucifié: Dieu lui a infligé le châtiment que méritait notre rébellion.

Ne refusez pas ce plan de réconciliation qui trouve sa source dans le cœur du Dieu qui vous aime.

Job Titles

For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith. Ephesians 4:12-13

God’s gifts to us are not for us but for others.

When the British Broadcasting Corporation asked for examples of important-sounding, obscure, and even bizarre job titles, one writer offered hers: Underwater Ceramic Technician. She was a dishwasher at a restaurant. Sometimes titles are used to make a job sound more important.

When the apostle Paul listed some of God’s gifts to the church in Ephesians 4:11, he did not intend for these to be understood as high-sounding job titles. All the parts of the body are necessary for the body to function properly. No one part is better than another.

What was of primary importance was the purpose of these gifts. They were “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to . . . the stature of the fullness of Christ” (vv.12-13).

It matters little what title we hold. What is important is that we strengthen the faith of God’s people. When we gauge our effectiveness by the standard that the Bible gives us, it will not matter when we are moved to another role or no longer hold a specific title. Out of love for God, we serve to build up fellow believers, and we let God give His commendation in heaven as He sees fit (Matt. 25:21).
 

Lord, please use me as Your instrument to touch
others’ lives. Help me not to be concerned
about what title I hold but instead that my
life might show others Your grace.
