Mon père ne voulait pas de l’évangile

“Je suis devenu chrétien à l’âge de 15 ans. Un an après, ma mère a cru au Seigneur Jésus. Mon père, lui, ne voulait pas entendre parler de ces “trucs religieux”. Mais à 84 ans, on lui a diagnostiqué une maladie en phase terminale. Un jour, il m’a appelé, la voix angoissée :

– J’appelle pour te dire au revoir.

Je suis allé chez lui le plus vite possible et j’ai pu le conduire à l’hôpital où son opération a été programmée pour le lendemain. Le matin, avant l’intervention, nous avons pu lire ensemble plusieurs paroles de la lettre aux Romains qui nous parle du péché de l’homme et du salut gratuit offert par Dieu. Je savais que mon père se sentait insulté à l’idée d’être appelé pécheur. Une partie de moi voulait dissimuler ce que ce texte de la Bible déclare sur le péché, mais j’aimais mon père, et je ne voulais rien lui cacher.

Après notre lecture, je l’ai regardé et lui ai demandé :

– Papa, as-tu déjà confessé tes péchés et demandé à Jésus Christ de te pardonner ?

– Non… a-t-il dit, puis il s’est arrêté un long moment. Et il a fini sa phrase : mais je crois qu’il est temps que je le fasse.

Je n’arrivais pas à y croire ! Ce jour-là, pour la première fois, mon père a prié à haute voix. Il a confessé ses péchés et il a placé sa confiance en Christ ce matin-là, juste avant son opération. Celle-ci fut un succès. Dans sa grâce, Dieu lui a accordé cinq années de vie supplémentaires. Ma femme et mes filles, mon frère et moi, nous étions à ses côtés lorsqu’il a quitté ce monde, en paix, pour être avec Jésus.”

What a Find !

I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord. 2 Kings 22:8

Father, please help me see the things I need to change in my life.

While scuba diving in 2021, Jennifer’s eyes fixed on a small, green bottle at the bottom of a river. She scooped up what she describes as “a once-in-a-lifetime find.” The bottle contained a message written by a young man on his eighteenth birthday in 1926! The words requested that whoever discovered the message return it to him. Jennifer used Facebook to locate a delighted family member of the man. Although he’d died in 1995, his once-hidden note brought joy to Jennifer and the man’s family.

In 2 Kings 22:8, we read that Hilkiah made an extraordinary find when he “found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord.” The high priest found what was likely the book of Deuteronomy. “When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law,” he was both deeply moved and greatly distressed (v. 11). Like the temple in Judah itself, God and the reading of and obedience to the Scriptures He’d inspired had been neglected by the people. In repentance, the king had the temple swept clean of idols and anything that would displease God as he instituted reforms for his nation (23:1–24).
