Grande foi, petite foi

(Jésus dit :) En vérité, je vous le dis : je n’ai pas trouvé, même en Israël, une si grande foi. Matthieu 8. 10

Aussitôt Jésus, étendant la main, le saisit et lui dit : Homme de petite foi, pourquoi as-tu douté ? Matthieu 14. 31
 

Jésus appréciait la foi de ceux qui l’approchaient.

– Un officier romain lui dit : “Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché à la maison, atteint de paralysie, souffrant horriblement. Jésus lui dit : J’irai, moi, et je le guérirai. Le centurion répondit : Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit ; mais dis seulement une parole, et mon serviteur sera guéri” (Matthieu 8. 6-8).

L’officier se reconnaît indigne de recevoir chez lui Jésus qui l’impressionne par son autorité, son amour et sa puissance. Pourtant, quand Jésus lui dit : “J’irai, moi, et je le guérirai”, il accepte cette parole avec confiance ; il croit ce que Jésus dit. Le Seigneur qualifie cela de “grande foi”. Cette foi est à la portée de chacun encore aujourd’hui…

– Une “petite foi”, ce n’est pas l’absence de foi. Lorsque les disciples sont sur le lac de Génésareth, dans la tempête, ils voient Jésus marcher sur les vagues. Alors Pierre lui dit : “Si c’est toi, commande-moi d’aller vers toi sur les eaux”. “Viens”, lui répond Jésus (Matthieu 14. 28, 29). Par la foi en celui qui donne cet ordre, Pierre sort de la barque et marche. Mais, “voyant que le vent était fort, il eut peur”. Il enfonce, sa foi vacille. Aussitôt le Seigneur le prend par la main et doit lui dire : “Homme de petite foi”.

Pourtant, qui d’entre nous aurait osé sortir de la barque à l’appel du Maître ?

Ne soyons pas découragés, amis croyants ; le Seigneur sera toujours là pour secourir les siens, pour nous tendre la main et nous saisir lorsque nous commençons à enfoncer. Ne tardons pas à la saisir.

Refreshed at Simon’s House

They refreshed my spirit and yours also. 1 Corinthians 16:18

What occasions stand out where you were memorably refreshed by the hospitality or welcome of others? How can you change the way you serve others to make such occasions more spiritually meaningful?

Today's Scripture & Insight:

My trip to Simon’s house was unforgettable. Under the cover of a starlit sky in Nyahururu, Kenya, we made our way to his modest home for dinner. The dirt floor and the lantern light reflected Simon’s limited means. What was on the menu, I don’t recall. What I can’t forget was Simon’s joy that we were his guests. His gracious hospitality was Jesus like—selfless, life-touching, and refreshing.

In 1 Corinthians 16:15–18, Paul mentioned a family—the household of Stephanas (v. 15)—who had a reputation for their caregiving. They’d “devoted themselves to the service of the Lord’s people” (v. 15).

While their service likely included tangible things (v. 17), the impact was such that Paul wrote, “they refreshed my spirit and yours also” (v. 18).

When we have opportunities to share with others, we rightly give attention to matters of food, setting, and other things that are fitting for such occasions. But we sometimes forget that although “the what” and “the where” matter, they’re not the most important things. Memorable meals are great and pleasant settings have their place, but food is limited in its capacity to fully nourish and encourage. True refreshment flows from God and is a matter of the heart; it reaches the hearts of others, and it continues to nourish long after the meal is over.
