Questions sans réponse ?

Éternel ! tu m’as sondé, tu m’as connu… Connaissance trop merveilleuse pour moi, si élevée que je n’y puis atteindre ! Psaume 139. 1, 6
 

Gladys Aylward (1902-1970) voulait servir le Seigneur en Chine. Quand elle y parvint après un interminable périple, elle fut accueillie par une femme missionnaire qui lui conseilla de porter des vêtements à la chinoise, parce que les Chinois étaient très méfiants envers les étrangers. Gladys mit ce conseil à profit. Quand la missionnaire la vit ainsi habillée, elle lui dit :

– Avec ces vêtements, tu as vraiment l’air d’une Chinoise ! Tu as les cheveux noirs et lisses, et tu es petite, exactement comme elles. Mets-toi donc devant le miroir !

Gladys se regarda et resta pensive un long moment. Puis elle dit :

– Quand j’étais petite, j’étais très ennuyée par deux choses. Premièrement, mes cheveux étaient noirs et raides. Je n’en avais jamais vu d’aussi laids. Deuxièmement j’étais la seule à être de petite taille alors que tous les membres de ma famille étaient grands. En ce temps-là, je pensais souvent : ce n’est pas juste. Mais aujourd’hui je comprends pourquoi j’ai les cheveux noirs et je suis restée petite. Dieu avait tout prévu dans sa sagesse.

C’est seulement vingt ans plus tard que Gladys reçut une réponse complète à ses questions : pourquoi Dieu l’avait créée ainsi et pas autrement. Elle fut en effet bien acceptée par la population chinoise et Dieu lui donna un service utile et béni auprès des orphelins.

Si Dieu permet dans notre vie quelque chose qui nous cause de la peine et suscite des questions, c’est peut-être que nous ne sommes pas encore arrivés dans notre “Chine” ! Mais il saura nous répondre en son temps.

Wise Advice

The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice. Proverbs 12:15

Father, by the work of the Holy Spirit, please give me the humility to receive good advice from others.

When the roof of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral caught fire in April 2019, its ancient wood beams and lead sheeting created a furnace so hot it couldn’t be contained. After the cathedral’s spire dramatically fell, attention turned to its bell towers. If the giant steel bells’ wooden frames also burned, their collapse would bring both towers down, leaving the cathedral in ruins.

Pulling his firefighters back for safety, General Gallet, commander of the Paris fire department, pondered what to do next. A firefighter named Remi nervously approached. “Respectfully, General,” he said, “I propose that we run hoses up the exterior of the towers.” Given the building’s fragility the commander dismissed the idea, but Remi spoke on. Soon General Gallet faced a decision: follow the junior firefighter’s advice or leave the cathedral to fall.

Scripture has much to say about taking advice. While this is sometimes in the context of youth respecting elders (Proverbs 6:20–23), most is not. Proverbs says, “the wise listen to advice” (12:15), wars are won with it (24:6), and only a fool fails to heed it (12:15). Wise people listen to good advice, whatever the age or rank of those giving it.

General Gallet listened to Remi. The burning bell frames were hosed down just in time, and the cathedral was saved. What problem do you need godly advice on today? Sometimes God guides the humble through a junior’s lips.
