L’amour de Dieu

Dieu met en évidence son amour à lui envers nous en ceci : lorsque nous étions encore pécheurs, Christ est mort pour nous. Romains 5. 8

Par ceci nous avons connu l’amour : c’est que lui a laissé sa vie pour nous. 1 Jean 3. 16
 

– Sa source est dans le cœur de Dieu. C’est là qu’il a trouvé un motif à son amour pour nous. Il nous aime, non parce que nous le méritons, mais parce qu’il est amour ; aimer est sa nature même (1 Jean 4. 8, 16).

– Son objectif : C’est d’abord son Fils unique. De toute éternité, “le Père aime le Fils” (Jean 5. 20). Et il aime aussi toutes ses créatures. C’est vous, c’est moi ; ce sont tous les humains, y compris les plus coupables. Si Dieu, qui est saint, a horreur du péché, il est aussi amour, il aime sans condition. Il veut faire grâce, sans aucune contrepartie, à celui qui reconnaît ses fautes et se repent.

– Son étendue : C’est l’humanité entière. “Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu’il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse pas, mais qu’il ait la vie éternelle” (Jean 3. 16).

Pourtant on entend dire : “Si Dieu aimait les hommes, permettrait-il tant de souffrances et d’injustices ?” Or elles ont pour origine la désobéissance de l’homme à la volonté de Dieu. Oui, sa vie indépendante de Dieu conduit l’humanité à la ruine, à la souffrance et à la mort.

L’amour de Dieu, lui, demeure et ne connaît aucun obstacle ; au contraire, il veut se déployer sur tous. Le plus grand des pécheurs reçoit la grâce de Dieu, s’il s’approche de la croix. Là, Jésus, Fils bien-aimé de Dieu, a porté le châtiment que méritaient nos péchés. La grâce de Dieu s’étend à tous ceux qui croient en lui. L’amour de Dieu est inépuisable. Jésus invite encore à s’approcher de lui : “Si quelqu’un a soif, qu’il vienne à moi et qu’il boive” (Jean 7. 37).

Labrador Angel

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love. Psalm 143:8

Loving God, thank You for showing me how to believe in love and joy again. Help me to be a channel of that hope for others.

Today's Scripture & Insight:

In 2019, Cap Dashwood and his sweet black lab companion, Chaela (“Chae” in memory of his lab who died; “la,” Dashwood’s abbreviation for “Labrador angel”), accomplished something remarkable: reaching a mountain summit each day for 365 consecutive days.

Dashwood has a moving story to tell. He left home at sixteen, explaining simply, “Bad family life.” But these past wounds led him to find healing elsewhere. He explains, “Sometimes when you’re disappointed by people, you turn to something else. You know?” For Dashwood, mountain climbing and the unconditional love of his black lab companion has been a big part of that “something else.”

For those of us, like myself, who deeply love our animal companions, a big piece of why we do is the sweet, utterly unconditional love they pour out—a kind of love that’s rare. But I like to think the love they effortlessly give points to a much greater and deeper reality than the failures of others—God’s unshakable, boundless love upholding the universe.

In Psalm 143, as in many of his prayers, it’s only David’s faith in that unshakable, “unfailing love” (v. 12) that tethers him to hope in a time when he feels utterly alone. But a lifetime of walking with God gives him just enough strength to trust that the morning will “bring me word of your unfailing love” (v. 8).

Just enough hope to trust again and to let God lead the way to paths unknown (v. 8).
