Ne crains pas

Des craintes, nous en avons souvent. Elles seraient justifiées si nous étions seuls, laissés à nous-mêmes dans un monde qui est de plus en plus difficile. Mais ceux qui se confient en Dieu ne sont jamais seuls, même si sa présence est invisible. Il leur a promis de les accompagner et de les protéger toujours et partout.

De multiples versets de la Bible en témoignent ; en voici quelques-uns : “Ne crains pas, car je t’ai racheté ; je t’ai appelé par ton nom, tu es à moi” (Ésaïe 43. 1). “Ne crains pas, car je suis avec toi ; ne sois pas inquiet, car moi je suis ton Dieu. Je te fortifierai ; oui, je t’aiderai ; oui, je te soutiendrai” (Ésaïe 41. 10). “Car moi, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, je tiens ta main droite, moi qui te dis : Ne crains pas, moi je t’aiderai” (Ésaïe 41. 13). “Lui-même a dit : Je ne te laisserai pas, et je ne t’abandonnerai pas” (Hébreux 13. 5).

Quelles que soient les difficultés, faisons-lui confiance et apprenons à dire et surtout à expérimenter : “Le Seigneur est mon aide ; je ne craindrai pas” (v. 6).

Pourquoi crains-tu, mon âme ? Au fort de la souffrance,
Le Seigneur n’est-il pas ton appui, ton soutien ?
Élève en haut les yeux ; il est ta délivrance.
Il ne te laisse pas ; mon âme, ne crains rien.

Non, je ne craindrai rien ! Ni Satan, ni le monde,
Ne peuvent m’arracher des bras du bon Berger.
Là je savoure en paix sa tendresse profonde ;
Là je suis pour toujours à l’abri du danger.

Flight of Ichabod

The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured. 1 Samuel 4:22

Dear Father, thank You for revealing Your glory through Jesus. Make me mindful of Your presence throughout this day.

Today's Scripture & Insight:

In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving tells of Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher who seeks to marry a beautiful young woman named Katrina. Key to the story is a headless horseman who haunts the colonial countryside. One night, Ichabod encounters a ghostly apparition on horseback and flees the region in terror. It’s clear to the reader that this “horseman” is actually a rival suitor for Katrina, who then marries her.

Ichabod is a name first seen in the Bible, and it too has a gloomy backstory. While at war with the Philistines, Israel carried the sacred ark of the covenant into battle. Bad move. Israel’s army was routed and the ark captured. Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of the high priest Eli, were killed (1 Samuel 4:17). Eli too would die (v. 18). When the pregnant wife of Phinehas heard the news, “she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains” (v. 19). With her last words she named her son Ichabod (literally, “no glory”).

“The Glory has departed from Israel,” she gasped (v. 22).  

Thankfully, God was unfolding a much larger story. His glory would ultimately be revealed in Jesus, who said of His disciples, “I have given them the glory that you [the Father] gave me” (John 17:22).

No one knows where the ark is today, but no matter. Ichabod has fled. Through Jesus, God has given us His very glory!
