Endormi (2)

Christ a été ressuscité d’entre les morts, prémices de ceux qui sont endormis. 1 Corinthiens 15. 20

Si nous croyons que Jésus est mort et qu’il est ressuscité, de même aussi, avec lui, Dieu amènera ceux qui se sont endormis par Jésus. 1 Thessaloniciens 4. 14

Plusieurs versets évoquent avec douceur la mort des croyants en disant qu’ils sont “endormis”. Cela laisse entendre que la mort est un état temporaire dans l’attente de la résurrection.

Quand Jésus a appris que son ami Lazare était mort, il a dit simplement : “Notre ami s’est endormi ; mais je vais pour le réveiller” (Jean 11. 11). Les disciples ont pensé qu’il s’agissait du repos du sommeil, alors le Seigneur a dit clairement qu’il était mort.

Voici le témoignage d’une personne qui a été ainsi consolée :

“Mon père était la personne que j’aimais le plus au monde. Il était un père dans toute sa signification. C’est sur ses genoux que je m’endormais, enfant. C’est sur son épaule qu’adolescente, je lui confiais mes peines, mes chagrins… Et puis, il est parti… un matin d’avril, en réanimation, à l’hôpital. Il est parti près de Dieu son Père qu’il avait fidèlement servi toute sa vie.

Pour moi, tout s’écroulait. Comment vivre sans lui ? Longtemps, j’ai tu ma douleur. Et puis un jour, elle est sortie : j’ai crié vers le ciel, et la consolation est venue. Alors que je parlais à Dieu de ma peine, j’ai lu Actes 7. 60 qui relate la fin d’Étienne. “Il s’endormit”, dit le texte biblique.

Cette parole a résonné fortement dans mon coeur, et je réentends la voix de l’infirmière qui téléphonait de l’hôpital : “Votre papa s’est paisiblement endormi”. Dieu me parlait et me rappelait, dans son amour, qu’il était présent lors de ce passage si difficile pour les humains. La paix de Dieu descendit en moi…”

Imperfect Plans

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21

God, I believe You’re in control of everything. Help me to live wisely in this world, committing all my plans to You.

Today's Scripture & Insight : Proverbs 19:20–23

I was exploring a library on the bottom floor of a new community center when an overhead crash suddenly shook the room. A few minutes later it happened again, and then again. An agitated librarian finally explained that a weight-lifting area was positioned directly above the library, and the noise occurred every time someone dropped a weight. Architects and designers had carefully planned many aspects of this state-of-the-art facility, yet someone had forgotten to locate the library away from all the action.

In life as well, our plans are often flawed. We overlook important considerations. Our plans don’t always account for accidents or surprises. Although planning helps us avoid financial shortfalls, time crunches, and health issues, even the most thorough strategies can’t eliminate all problems from our lives. We live in a post-Eden world.

With God’s help, we can find the balance between prudently considering the future (Proverbs 6:6–8) and responding to difficulties. God often has a purpose for the trouble He allows into our lives. He may use it to develop patience in us, to increase our faith, or simply to bring us closer to Him. The Bible reminds us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21). As we submit our goals and hopes for the future to Jesus, He’ll show us what He wants to accomplish in us and through us.
