“À 25 ans, j’avais tout pour être heureuse : mari, logement, travail… et la santé. Mais les souvenirs de mon enfance me hantaient (immoralité et bagarres dans ma famille). J’avais ce besoin irrésistible de m’autodétruire. Je suis devenue infidèle, menteuse et tricheuse. J’ai divorcé et perdu tous mes biens. Je me suis retrouvée au chômage, criblée de dettes. Je faisais n’importe quoi…

Lors d’un rendez-vous chez le médecin qui me suivait depuis que j’étais toute petite, je lui ai confié ma crainte d’avoir le sida. J’ai ajouté que ce serait une juste punition divine.

J’ai eu la chance d’être face à un chrétien qui m’a répondu : “Dieu est amour”. Alors je me suis mise à chercher Dieu. J’ai acheté une Bible mais je n’y comprenais pas grand-chose. Je suis allée à la messe à l’église où j’avais été baptisée, mais je n’y ai pas trouvé de réconfort.

J’allais tout abandonner quand Dieu m’a interpellée au moyen d’une série télévisée américaine où un prisonnier témoignait qu’il s’était converti au Christ grâce à un texte biblique : “Voici, je me tiens à la porte et je frappe : si quelqu’un entend ma voix et qu’il ouvre la porte, j’entrerai chez lui et je souperai avec lui, et lui avec moi” (Apocalypse 3. 20). Ce fut un choc, une révélation. Oui, je voulais lui ouvrir la porte pour qu’il me tienne compagnie. À partir de ce jour, j’ai découvert toutes les bonnes choses que le Seigneur Jésus avait en réserve pour moi. J’ai reconstruit ma vie, avec Dieu pour architecte.”

Today's Scripture & Insight: Deuteronomy 11:18–20

On his twelfth Christmas, the boy eagerly awaited the opening of the gifts under the tree. He was yearning for a new bike, but his hopes were dashed—the last present he received was a dictionary. On the first page, he read: “To Charles from Mother and Daddy, 1958. With love and high hopes for your best work in school.”

In the next decade, Chuck did do well in school. He graduated from college and later, aviation training. He became a pilot working overseas, fulfilling his passion to help people in need and to share Jesus with them. Now some sixty years after receiving this gift, he shared the well-worn dictionary with his grandchildren. It had become for him a symbol of his parents’ loving investment in his future, and Chuck still treasures it. But he’s even more grateful for the daily investment his parents made in building his faith by teaching him about God and the Scriptures.

Deuteronomy 11 talks about the importance of taking every opportunity to share the words of Scripture with children: “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (v. 19).

For Chuck, the eternal values planted when he was a boy bloomed into a lifetime of service for his Savior. With God’s enablement, who knows how much our investment in someone’s spiritual growth will yield.
