Console-toi

(Jésus dit :) Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j’ai trouvé ma brebis, celle qui était perdue. Je vous dis qu’ainsi il y aura de la joie au ciel pour un seul pécheur qui se repent. Luc 15. 6

Vous me chercherez, et vous me trouverez, car vous me rechercherez de tout votre coeur. Jérémie 29. 13

“On se réveille un beau jour et on se demande comment on a fait pour en arriver là. Où aller ? … Perdu comme peut l’être un enfant qui ne trouve plus ses parents, perdu à en avoir mal. Avoir l’impression de ne pas être à sa place dans le monde comme si on était né au mauvais endroit, au mauvais moment… Pourtant, ce sentiment d’être perdu, si douloureux soit-il, peut être lu comme un signe de la grâce divine. Car, comme la soif nous rappelle notre besoin de boire, ce sentiment rappelle à notre souvenir notre besoin de Dieu.” (d’après M. Riddell)

La conscience d’être perdu, n’est-ce pas le premier pas pour trouver le salut ? Lorsqu’elle nous pousse à chercher Dieu, c’est le second. Dans cette recherche, ayons confiance, car c’est premièrement pour Dieu que nous sommes perdus. Dans une parabole, Jésus pose la question : “Quel est l’homme parmi vous qui, s’il a 100 brebis et en a perdu une, ne laisse les 99 au désert pour aller après celle qui est perdue, jusqu’à ce qu’il l’ait trouvée ? Quand il l’a trouvée, il la met sur ses épaules, tout joyeux” (Luc 15. 4, 5). Jésus part d’un fait banal, la perte d’une brebis, pour nous parler de l’amour de Dieu qui nous cherche, et se réjouit de nous avoir trouvés.

Lorsque nous rencontrons Dieu par la foi, notre sentiment d’être perdu fait place à la joie de le connaître. Notre vie trouve alors son sens.

Si je cherche Dieu, lui me cherchait déjà. Mystérieusement, notre quête de Dieu n’est-elle pas la preuve qu’il s’approche de nous ? “Console-toi, tu ne me chercherais pas, si tu ne m’avais trouvé” (Blaise Pascal).

Trust the Light

Believe in the light . . . so that you may become children of light. John 12:36

Jesus, thank You for being the light in my darkness. Help me to trust and keep going.

Today's Scripture & Insight: John 12:25–33, 35–36
The weather forecast said bomb cyclone. That’s what happens when a winter storm rapidly intensifies as the atmospheric pressure drops. By the time night fell, the blizzard conditions made the highway to the Denver airport almost impossible to see. Almost. But when it’s your daughter who’s flying home to visit, you do what you have to do. You pack extra clothes and water (just in case you get stranded on the highway), drive very slowly, pray without ceasing, and last but not least, trust your headlights. And sometimes you can achieve the almost impossible.

Jesus foretold of a storm on the horizon, one that would involve His death (John 12:31–33), and one that would challenge His followers to stay faithful and serve (v. 26). It was going to get dark and be almost impossible to see. Almost. So what did Jesus tell them to do? Believe, or trust, the Light (v. 36). That was the only way they could keep going forward and stay faithful.

Jesus would only be with them a little while longer. But believers have His Spirit as our constant guide to light the way. We too will face dark times when it’s almost impossible to see the way ahead. Almost. But by believing, or trusting in the Light, we can press on.
