L’au-delà avec Jésus

La poussière retourne à la terre…, l’esprit retourne à Dieu qui l’a donné. Ecclésiaste 12. 7

Parce que moi je vis, vous aussi vous vivrez. Jean 14. 19

Tout être humain, qu’il l’admette ou non, est préoccupé par l’au-delà. Que se passera-t-il pour moi après ma mort ? Cette question ne doit pas être éludée.

Qu’y a-t-il donc après ? La Bible nous le dit dans une parabole (Luc 16. 19-31). Le défunt se trouve soit avec Jésus s’il a cru en lui, soit loin de lui, s’il n’a pas cru durant sa vie. Rien, pas même des prières, ne peut changer l’état de celui qui est mort. Il est dans l’au-delà, et nous n’avons plus de contact avec lui, ni lui avec nous.

Nous avons un corps, mais nous avons aussi une âme. Notre corps est la partie matérielle de notre être, et notre âme en est la partie immatérielle. Mais la mort de notre corps constitue un point de passage, une charnière entre la vie terrestre et l’autre vie.

Dieu nous demande, durant notre vie sur la terre, d’accepter le salut qu’il offre par Jésus Christ à tout être humain. Il ne force personne, mais il nous invite à faire ce choix. Lors de la crucifixion, il y avait à côté de Jésus un malfaiteur qui, avant de mourir, a reconnu en Jésus le Fils de Dieu. Par la foi, il lui a demandé : “Souviens-toi de moi, Seigneur, quand tu viendras dans ton royaume”. Que lui a répondu Jésus ? “Aujourd’hui tu seras avec moi dans le paradis” (Luc 23. 42, 43). Il n’a pas dit : “À la résurrection des morts, ou au jugement dernier”, mais “aujourd’hui”. Quand nous fermerons les yeux pour la dernière fois ici, ce sera pour les ouvrir immédiatement sur l’au-delà. Lequel… près de Jésus, ou loin de lui ?

Sticks, Bricks, and God

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. Job 1:21

Father, forgive me for the times I lose sight of You in the midst of life’s difficulties. Help me to see You with fresh eyes.

After praying about what God was calling them to do in the next phase of their lives, Mark and Nina determined that moving to the urban core of the city was what they needed to do. They purchased a vacant house and renovation was well underway—then came the storm. Mark wrote in a text message to me: “We had a surprise this morning. The tornado that came through Jefferson City, took out our renovation—down to sticks and bricks. God is up to something.”

Uncontrollable storms are not the only things that surprise us and create confusion in our lives. Not losing sight of God in the midst of misfortune, however, is one of the keys of survival.

The weather catastrophe in Job’s life that resulted in his loss of property and the death of his children (Job 1:19) was but one of the shocking surprises he faced. Prior to that, three messengers had come bearing bad news (vv. 13–17).

On any given day, we can go from feasting to mourning, from celebrating life to processing death, or some other life challenge. Our lives can swiftly be reduced to “sticks and bricks”—financially, relationally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. But God is mightier than any storm. Surviving life’s trials requires faith that’s focused on Him—faith that enables us to say with Job and others, “May the name of the Lord be praised” (v. 21).
