J’espérerai

Nous espérons dans le Dieu vivant qui est le conservateur de tous les hommes, surtout des fidèles. 1 Timothée 4. 10

J’espérerai en lui. Lamentations de Jérémie 3. 24

Jérémie a assisté à la première prise de Jérusalem par les Chaldéens (environ 600 ans avant Jésus Christ), et dans ses “Lamentations” il décrit la situation dramatique qu’il a sous les yeux. Il ouvre son cœur et verse des larmes devant son Dieu. Tout est sombre, l’horizon est bouché, le désespoir n’est pas loin : “Tu as rejeté mon âme loin de la paix, j’ai oublié le bonheur, et j’ai dit : Ma confiance a disparu, et mon espérance en l’Éternel” (3. 17, 18). Mais soudain, Jérémie proclame : “C’est pourquoi j’ai espérance… c’est pourquoi j’espérerai en lui” (3. 21, 24). Quel est son secret pour qu’il parvienne encore à espérer ? A-t-il une force intérieure qui le conduit à l’espérance ? Non, mais il connaît la bonté du Seigneur : “Ce sont les bontés de l’Éternel que nous ne sommes pas consumés, car ses compassions ne cessent pas ; elles sont nouvelles chaque matin ; grande est ta fidélité !” (3. 22, 23).

Nous ne trouverons pas en nous l’énergie pour être encouragés, mais l’espérance renaîtra si nous levons les yeux vers notre Dieu, bon et compatissant. “S’il afflige, il a aussi compassion, selon la grandeur de ses bontés” (3. 32). Oui, nous nous confions avec espérance en Dieu qui nous aime. Sa fidélité est inconditionnelle et il tient ses promesses.

Vous qui êtes triste, qui souffrez, et qui lisez ces lignes, espérez avec nous dans ce Dieu-là. Invoquons-le, disons-lui toute notre souffrance. Avec lui, nous avons toujours raison d’espérer, il est “le Dieu d’espérance” (Romains 15. 13).

Trusting God in Times of Sorrow

Heavenly Father, fan into flame the gift of faith in me, that I might share with love and power my testimony of how You work in my life.

When a man known as “Papa John” learned he had terminal cancer, he and his wife, Carol, sensed God calling them to share their illness journey online. Believing that God would minister through their vulnerability, they posted their moments of joy and their sorrow and pain for two years.

When Carol wrote that her husband “went into the outstretched arms of Jesus,” hundreds of people responded, with many thanking Carol for their openness. One person remarked that hearing about dying from a Christian point of view was healthy, for “we all have to die” someday. Another said that although she’d never met the couple personally, she couldn’t express how much encouragement she’d received through their witness of trusting God.

Although Papa John sometimes felt excruciating pain, he and Carol shared their story so they could demonstrate how God upheld them. They knew their testimony would bear fruit for God, echoing what Paul wrote to Timothy when he suffered: “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

God can use even the death of a loved one to strengthen our faith in Him (and the faith of others) through the grace we receive in Christ Jesus (v. 9). If you’re experiencing anguish and difficulty, know that He can bring comfort and peace.
