Toi, le connais-tu ?

(Jésus dit :) Moi, je suis le bon berger : je connais les miens, et je suis connu des miens, comme le Père me connaît et moi je connais le Père ; et je laisse ma vie pour les brebis. Jean 10. 14, 15

C’est un vieil homme à la fin de sa vie, couché sur un lit d’hôpital. Ce jour-là, son petit-fils de dix ans vient le voir. Plusieurs amis du malade sont autour du lit. Doit-il repartir ? Non, cet enfant a une question urgente à poser à son grand-père. Il s’avance et dit :

– S’il vous plaît, je voudrais que tout le monde sorte un moment.

Un peu surpris par cette demande, tous quittent la chambre. Alors le garçon, s’approchant tout près, dit avec le plus grand sérieux :

– Grand-papa, on m’a dit que tu allais mourir. Depuis que je vais au club biblique, je connais le Seigneur Jésus, je sais que j’irai au ciel, chez lui. Mais toi, est-ce que tu le connais ?

Le grand-père reste silencieux un long moment et dit :

– Va me chercher ton moniteur.

Le moniteur aura la joie de faire connaître l’évangile à cet homme, peu avant sa mort. Quelques jours plus tard, avant de pousser son dernier soupir, celui-ci dira à son petit-fils :

– Nous nous retrouverons là-haut ; cette fois, j’en suis sûr.

L’évangile, la bonne nouvelle de Dieu pour les hommes, est toujours le même ; il s’adresse à tous, aux enfants comme aux personnes âgées. Il dit qu’il y a un seul chemin vers Dieu, un seul Sauveur pour tous, Jésus Christ. Par sa mort, il a ouvert l’accès du ciel à tout pécheur repentant. “L’évangile… est la puissance de Dieu pour sauver quiconque croit” (Romains 1. 16).

“God Stuff”

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15

Most of Mike’s co-workers knew little about Christianity, nor did they seem to care. But they knew he cared. One day near the Easter season, someone casually mentioned that they’d heard Easter had something to do with Passover and wondered what the connection was. “Hey, Mike!” he said. “You know about this God stuff. What’s Passover?”

So Mike explained how God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. He told them about the ten plagues, including the death of the firstborn in every household. He explained how the death angel “passed over” the houses whose doorframes were covered by the blood of a sacrificed lamb. Then he shared how Jesus was later crucified at the Passover season as the once-and-for-all sacrificial Lamb. Suddenly Mike realized, Hey, I’m witnessing!

Peter the disciple gave advice to a church in a culture that didn’t know about God. He said, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

Because Mike had been open about his faith, he got the chance to share that faith naturally, and he could do so with “gentleness and respect” (v. 15).

We can too. With the help of God’s Holy Spirit, we can explain in simple terms what matters most in life—that “stuff” about God.

How do you feel when someone wants to discuss matters of faith with you? Why does Peter add that we are to share our faith “with gentleness and respect”?

Father, help me be ready to explain the hope and purpose You can bring to life.
