Résistez !

Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, mais ne peuvent pas tuer l’âme ; craignez plutôt celui qui peut détruire et l’âme et le corps. Matthieu 10. 28

Emprisonnée parce qu’elle était la soeur du pasteur martyr Pierre Durand, et comme lui attachée à la Bible, Marie Durand (1711-1776) a enduré 38 années de captivité dans la Tour de Constance à Aigues-Mortes (France).

Libérée en 1768, elle laissa ce message, qu’elle avait gravé pendant ces années cruelles sur une dalle de son sombre cachot : “Résister”. Ce mot parle encore à ceux qui sont persécutés pour le nom du Seigneur Jésus, et à ceux qui cherchent à lui être fidèles. Ruben Saillens (1855-1942) écrivit ce poème en souvenir de la foi de Marie Durand :

Non, ce n’est pas ta lourde grille – Ni ton mur noir,
Sombre tour, funeste bastille, – Que j’aime voir !
Mais ces traits qui, par une femme, – Furent sculptés,
Ce mot qui recouvre un long drame : Résister !

Lorsqu’elle vit, la femme austère, – La mort de loin,
Elle voulut que cette pierre – Fût son témoin,
Et, pour prévenir après elle – Les lâchetés,
Elle écrivit sur la margelle : Résister !

En ce temps-là, dans son Versailles, – Le roi riait,
Tandis qu’ici, sous ces murailles, – La foi priait.
L’un écrivait dans une fête : – Persécutez !
L’autre écrivait, baissant la tête : Résistez !

Et c’est toi qui fus la plus forte, – Vaillante foi !
Depuis longtemps la femme est morte – Et mort le roi,
Mais, tandis que sceptre et couronne – Sont emportés,
Dans la tour ce vieux mot rayonne : Résister !

Joshua 1:1–9

Tsundoku. It’s the word I’ve always needed! A Japanese term, it refers to the stack of books on a bedside table waiting to be read. Books offer the potential for learning or an escape to a different time or place, and I long for the delights and insights found within their pages. So, the stack remains.

The idea that we can find enjoyment and help in a book is even more true for the book of books—the Bible. I see the encouragement to immerse oneself in Scripture in God’s instructions to Joshua, the newly appointed leader of Israel, commissioned to lead them into the land promised to the Israelites (Joshua 1:8).

Knowing the difficulty ahead, God assured Joshua, “I will be with you” (v. 5). His help would come, in part, through Joshua’s obedience to God’s commands. So God instructed him to “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it” (v. 8). Although Joshua had the Book of the Law, he needed to regularly search it to gain insight and understanding into who God is and His will for His people.
