J’ai découvert Dieu en prison

(Jésus dit :) Venez à moi, vous tous qui vous fatiguez et qui êtes chargés, et moi, je vous donnerai du repos. Matthieu 11. 28

Pierre-Marc n’arrivait pas à se remettre de la mort de son père. Au fil des années, il est tombé peu à peu dans la dépendance à l’alcool, les bagarres et… s’est finalement retrouvé en prison, accusé de tentative de meurtre.

Au bout d’un mois, désespéré, il demande à voir l’aumônier à qui il confie : “Je prie, mais Dieu ne me répond pas”. À partir de ce jour-là, ils se rencontrent chaque semaine. “Pierre-Marc était assoiffé comme le sable du désert. Il voulait tout savoir. Il me parlait de sa vie, et moi, je lui parlais de Jésus.”

Pierre-Marc, bouleversé par l’amour du Christ, demande à son nouvel ami de lui expliquer les textes de la Bible. “La prison, explique-t-il, m’a donné un espace pour Dieu. C’est là que Dieu m’a permis de changer intérieurement, d’ouvrir les yeux sur ma vie d’avant. La liberté a toujours été très importante pour moi. J’en avais même fait tatouer le mot sur mon dos, bien avant ma conversion. Cependant, ce n’est qu’en prison que j’ai compris sa véritable signification. Jésus m’a rendu libre. Il était toujours avec moi, seulement je ne l’avais pas vu.”

Sorti de prison, il raconte : “J’ai le désir profond d’apprendre à mieux connaître Dieu. J’ai soif de prier, de lire la Bible. Dieu m’a libéré, non seulement physiquement, mais mentalement et spirituellement. Je peux en parler aujourd’hui car j’ai expérimenté la puissance de la foi dans le Christ. Il y a trois ans, il aurait été impensable pour moi d’imaginer qu’un jour, je témoignerais de ma foi.”

Instead of Revenge

How did Jesus live out the command to love one’s enemies? What will you do today to show God’s love to those who have harmed you?

After Jim Elliot and four other missionaries were killed by Huaorani tribesmen in 1956, no one expected what happened next. Jim’s wife, Elisabeth, their young daughter, and another missionary’s sister willingly chose to make their home among the very people who killed their loved ones. They spent several years living in the Huaorani community, learning their language, and translating the Bible for them. These women’s testimony of forgiveness and kindness convinced the Huaorani of God’s love for them and many received Jesus as their Savior.

What Elisabeth and her friend did is an incredible example of not repaying evil with evil but with good (Romans 12:17). The apostle Paul encouraged the church in Rome to show through their actions the transformation that God had brought into their own lives. What did Paul have in mind? They were to go beyond the natural desire to take revenge; instead, they were to show love to their enemies by meeting their needs, such as providing food or water.

Why do this? Paul quotes a proverb from the Old Testament: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink” (v. 20; Proverbs 25:21–22). The apostle was revealing that the kindness shown by believers to their enemies could win them over and light the fire of repentance in their hearts.
