Gratuitement… mais à quel prix !

Vous avez été achetés à grand prix ! 1 Corinthiens 6. 20

[Seigneur], tu as été immolé, et tu as acheté pour Dieu par ton sang, de toute tribu, et langue, et peuple, et nation. Apocalypse 5. 9

On entend parfois : “C’est trop facile de dire qu’il suffit de croire pour être sauvé !” On peut répondre : “Facile pour qui : pour l’homme ou pour Dieu ?”

Avec amour Dieu accueille l’homme tel qu’il est, pécheur, et il lui donne la vie éternelle. Il fait de lui son enfant pour le recevoir dans son ciel. Que demande-t-il en contrepartie ? Seulement de le croire, de lui faire confiance. Croire est le moyen de salut le plus simple qui soit. Il est à la portée de l’enfant comme de la personne âgée, de l’ignorant et du savant. Il ne s’agit ni de faire, ni de donner : “Qui croit au Fils [de Dieu] a la vie éternelle” (Jean 3. 36). Pour être sauvé, après s’être reconnu perdu, chacun doit croire à la valeur du sacrifice de Jésus.

Ainsi, pour le croyant tout est gratuit. Mais Dieu, lui, a dû payer le prix de cette libération : il a donné son Fils. “Il n’a pas épargné son propre Fils, mais l’a livré pour nous tous” (Romains 8. 32). Nous ne pouvons pas comprendre ce que cela a été pour Dieu de donner son Fils pour nous.

La Bible parle aussi maintes fois des souffrances de Jésus sur la croix. Par anticipation, on les trouve dans les Psaumes : “Mon Dieu ! Mon Dieu ! Pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné ?” (Psaume 22. 1) et par la voix des prophètes : “L’Éternel a fait tomber sur lui l’iniquité de nous tous” (Ésaïe 53. 6). On en trouve l’expression dans les évangiles, les épîtres et jusque dans l’Apocalypse.

Oui, le croyant est sauvé gratuitement, parce que Jésus a payé pour lui un prix infini !

Shining the Light

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14

What’s one way you could be more welcoming to the lonely and needy around you? How can the Holy Spirit help you be a city set on a hill for others to see?

Stephen told his parents that he needed to get to school early every day, but for some reason he never explained why it was so important. Yet they made sure he arrived at Northview High School by 7:15 each morning.

On a wintry day during his junior year, Stephen was in a car accident that sadly took his life. Later, his mom and dad found out why he’d been going to school so early. Each morning he and some friends had gathered at the school entrance to greet other students with a smile, a wave, and a kind word. It made all students—even those who weren’t popular—feel welcomed and accepted.

A believer in Jesus, Stephen wanted to share His joy with those who desperately needed it. His example lives on as a reminder that one of the best ways to shine the light of Christ’s love is by gestures of kindness and through a welcoming spirit.

In Matthew 5:14–16, Jesus reveals that in Him we’re “the light of the world” and “a town built on a hill” (v. 14). Ancient cities were often built of white limestone, truly standing out as they reflected the blazing sun. May we choose not to be hidden but to give light “to everyone in the house” (v. 15).

And as we “let [our] light shine before others” (v. 16), may they experience the welcoming love of Christ.
