Mme Li vivait chez l’un de ses fils, en Chine. Comme ils étaient très pauvres, elle couchait dans l’étable avec les chèvres, mais cela ne l’empêchait pas d’être heureuse. Elle avait entendu parler de Jésus pour la première fois au début des années 1960, alors qu’elle venait de se casser la jambe en travaillant dans un champ. Elle était restée clouée au lit pendant huit mois. Mais un jour, elle a improvisé deux béquilles pour aller chez une de ses connaissances dans un village voisin, où elle a eu l’occasion de rencontrer un chrétien. C’était au plus fort de la révolution culturelle et le christianisme était alors strictement interdit.

Mme Li a été profondément touchée par le témoignage de cet homme. Il s’adressait à Dieu comme s’il s’agissait d’un père aimant. À la fin du moment de prière, la vieille dame a posé beaucoup de questions : “Qui est ce Dieu ? Est-ce qu’il peut être mon père à moi aussi ?” Elle a accepté Jésus pour son Sauveur, et par la suite a participé à des réunions secrètes régulières, au cours desquelles on lisait des passages de la Bible. Elle ne savait pas lire, pourtant elle aurait bien voulu posséder elle-même le précieux livre.

Bien des années plus tard, alors qu’elle approchait des 96 ans, elle apprit qu’on distribuait des Bibles dans une église. Sans hésiter, elle se mit en chemin, malgré une assez longue distance. Lorsqu’enfin elle eut sa Bible en main, un grand sourire illumina son visage : “Maintenant que j’ai ma propre Bible, je vais pouvoir demander à ma famille de me la lire tous les jours.”

Gifts from Above

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel. Matthew 1:23

How can you give the gift of Jesus today? How does His presence lead you to share your resources of time, wisdom, and love with others?

According to an old story, a man named Nicholas (born in ad 270) heard about a father who was so poor that he couldn’t feed his three daughters, much less provide for their future marriages. Wanting to assist the father, but hoping to keep his help a secret, Nicholas threw a bag of gold through an open window, which landed in a sock or shoe drying on the hearth. That man was known as St. Nicholas, who later became the inspiration for Santa Claus.

When I heard that story of a gift coming down from above, I thought of God the Father, who out of love and compassion sent to earth the greatest gift, His Son, through a miraculous birth. According to Matthew’s gospel, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy that a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son whom they would call Immanuel, meaning “God with us” (1:23).

As lovely as Nicholas’s gift was, how much more amazing is the gift of Jesus. He left heaven to become a man, died and rose again, and is God living with us. He brings us comfort when we’re hurting and sad; He encourages us when we feel downhearted; He reveals the truth to us when we might be deceived.
