Certitudes de la foi

La foi est l'assurance de ce qu'on espère, et la conviction de réalités qu'on ne voit pas. Hébreux 11. 1

Prenez le bouclier de la foi grâce auquel vous pourrez éteindre toutes les flèches enflammées du Méchant. Éphésiens 6. 16
 

Voltaire a écrit : «Le doute est un état moral désagréable, mais la certitude est ridicule». De plus en plus, toute certitude est jugée périmée ou puérile. L'incertitude est considérée comme seule raisonnable et on y trouve même un certain plaisir. Notre vie, notre travail, nos relations, la société dans laquelle nous vivons, tout peut être bouleversé à une vitesse phénoménale. Le monde tel que nous le voyons “passe” (1 Corinthiens 7. 31).

Pourtant certaines choses sont stables : le système solaire, les étoiles… Bien plus : Dieu a parlé aux hommes, nous avons dans les mains la Bible dont les premiers textes ont plus de 3500 ans. Et Jésus a dit : “Le ciel et la terre passeront, mais mes paroles ne passeront pas” (Matthieu 24. 35). La Bible nous donne des certitudes :

– Celle d'être sauvés : «Cette parole est certaine… : le Christ Jésus est venu dans le monde pour sauver les pécheurs» (1 Timothée 1. 15).

– Celle d'avoir la vie éternelle : «Cette parole est certaine ; car si nous sommes morts avec lui (Jésus), nous vivrons aussi avec lui» (2 Timothée 2. 11).

– Celle d'être avec Christ dans la gloire : nous avons cette espérance “comme une ancre de l'âme, sûre et ferme” (Hébreux 6. 18, 19).

– Celle du jugement : Dieu “a fixé un jour où il doit juger avec justice la terre habitée, par l'Homme (Jésus) qu'il a destiné à cela, ce dont il a donné une preuve certaine à tous, en le ressuscitant d'entre les morts” (Actes 17. 31).

Vous cherchez des certitudes ? Tournez-vous vers Jésus Christ, Il est “le Même, hier, et aujourd'hui, et éternellement” (Hébreux 13. 8).

Jesus in Disguise

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. Proverbs 19:17

Dear Jesus, help me to see You in the needs of others today and to love You by loving them.

My son Geoff recently participated in a “homeless simulation.” He spent three days and two nights living on the streets of his city, sleeping outside in below freezing temperatures. Without food, money, or shelter, he relied on the kindness of strangers for his basic needs. On one of those days his only food was a sandwich, bought by a man who heard him asking for stale bread at a fast-food restaurant.

Geoff told me later it was one of the hardest things he’d ever done, yet it profoundly impacted his outlook on others. He spent the day after his “simulation” seeking out homeless people who had been kind to him during his time on the street, doing what he could to assist them in simple ways. They were surprised to discover he wasn’t actually homeless and were grateful he cared enough to try to see life through their eyes.

My son’s experience calls to mind Jesus’s words: “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. . . . Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:36, 40). Whether we give a word of encouragement or a bag of groceries, God calls us to lovingly attend to the needs of others. Our kindness to others is kindness to Him.
