Le baptême : identifiés à Jésus dans sa mort (3)

Nous tous qui avons été baptisés pour le Christ Jésus, nous avons été baptisés pour sa mort. Nous avons donc été ensevelis avec lui par le baptême, pour la mort, afin que, comme Christ a été ressuscité d'entre les morts par la gloire du Père, de même nous aussi nous marchions en nouveauté de vie. Romains 6. 3, 4
 

L'apôtre Paul donne cet enseignement sur le baptême chrétien dans le chapitre 6 de sa lettre aux chrétiens de Rome, en réponse à la question : “Allons-nous demeurer dans le péché afin que la grâce abonde ? ” Il répond de manière très forte : “Absolument pas ! ”

Il étaye sa réponse en quatre points :

– C'est incompatible avec le fait que nous sommes identifiés à Christ (Romains 6. 1-11).

– Pécher n'est plus inévitable car la puissance du péché a été vaincue par la grâce (v. 12-14).

– Nous ne devons pas tolérer le péché dans notre vie car il deviendrait notre maître (v. 15-19).

– Pratiquer le péché conduit à la mort (v. 20-23).

Ainsi le baptême est le signe que nous avons été identifiés à Jésus dans sa mort pour pouvoir vivre une vie nouvelle. Comme chrétiens, nous sommes morts pour vivre : morts à notre ancienne manière de vivre centrée sur nous-mêmes, à notre égoïsme, à notre mensonge, à nos convoitises de toutes sortes… Tout cela a été enseveli avec Jésus. C'est ce que Dieu déclare, et nous sommes encouragés à vivre cette nouvelle condition : “Considérez-vous vous-mêmes com ? me morts au péché, mais comme vivants à Dieu dans le Christ Jésus” (Romains 6. 11). Oui, c'est désormais un nouveau regard que nous sommes invités à porter sur nous-mêmes, un regard de foi afin de nous voir résolument en Christ, et de vivre d'une manière nouvelle, en nouveauté de vie. Vivre pour lui.

God, thank You for graciously giving us mentors who can show us by example how to live for You, and thank You for giving us Your Son, the only perfect model of faith.

My six-year-old son, Owen, was thrilled to receive a new board game. But after a half hour reading the rules, he was frustrated. He couldn’t quite figure out how it worked. It wasn’t until later, when a friend came over who already knew how to play, that Owen finally got to enjoy his present.

Watching them play, I was reminded of how much easier it is to learn something new if you have an experienced teacher. When we’re learning, reading the instructions helps, but having a friend who can demonstrate makes a huge difference.

The apostle Paul understood this too. Writing to Titus about how he could help his church grow in faith, Paul emphasized the value of experienced believers who could model Christian faith. Of course teaching “sound doctrine” was important, but it didn’t just need to be talked about—it needed to be lived out. Paul wrote that older men and women ought to be self-controlled, kind, and loving (Titus 2:2–5). “In everything,” he said, “set them an example by doing what is good” (v. 7).

I’m thankful for solid teaching, but I’m also thankful for the many people who have been hands-on teachers. They’ve shown me by their lives what it looks like to be a disciple of Christ and have made it easier for me to see how I can walk that path too.
