La communion : partager un repas (5)

(Jésus dit : ) Voici, je me tiens à la porte et je frappe : si quelqu'un entend ma voix et qu'il ouvre la porte, j'entrerai chez lui et je souperai avec lui, et lui avec moi. Apocalypse 3. 20
 

Prendre un repas ensemble a souvent une valeur symbolique, car le repas est un moment privilégié pour l'échange.

Ainsi, dans plusieurs récits de la Bible, les repas sont l'occasion d'échanges, mais aussi de réconciliation et d'alliance (Genèse 18. 8 et 31. 54 ; 2 Samuel 9. 13). Cette valeur symbolique est particulièrement claire quand c'est avec le Seigneur lui-même que le repas est partagé. Alors s'exprime notre communion avec lui.

Le Seigneur veut parler avec nous, il frappe à notre porte, il s'abaisse jusqu'à dire à chacun : Ouvre-moi la porte de ton cœur ! Mais il ne s'impose pas à celui qui ne souhaite pas sa présence.

Le jour de sa résurrection, il a marché avec deux disciples, mais il a attendu qu'ils l'invitent pour rester avec eux. Alors, au moment du repas, leurs yeux se sont ouverts et ils l'ont reconnu comme le Seigneur ressuscité (Luc 24. 13-33).

Cette communion est particulièrement vécue lors d'un culte où la Cène est célébrée (1 Corinthiens 10. 16). Il y a la communion «horizontale» qui unit ceux qui y participent : ils partagent les mêmes privilèges par rapport au Seigneur et ils sont liés entre eux. Il y a aussi, et même avant tout, la communion «verticale» qui unit chacun au Seigneur, et qui unit l'ensemble (image de l'Église) au Christ (l'Époux). La Cène du Seigneur est le souvenir de Celui qui s'est donné pour nous. Combien il est heureux de pouvoir y participer !

Creator and Sustainer

What in God’s creation has caused you to worship Him? Why?

Working with a magnifying glass and tweezers, Swiss watchmaker Phillipe meticulously explained to me how he takes apart, cleans, and reassembles the tiny parts of specialty mechanical watches. Looking at all the intricate pieces, Phillipe showed me the essential component of the timepiece, the mainspring. The mainspring is the component that moves all the gears to allow the watch to keep time. Without it, even the most expertly designed watch will not function.

In a beautiful New Testament passage found in the book of Hebrews, the writer eloquently praises Jesus for being the one through whom God created the heavens and the earth. Like the intricacy of a specialty watch, every detail of our universe was created by Jesus (Hebrews 1:2). From the vastness of the solar system to the uniqueness of our fingerprints, all things were made by Him.

But more than the Creator, Jesus, like a clock’s mainspring, is essential for the function and flourishing of creation. His presence continually “[sustains] all things by his powerful word” (v. 3), keeping all that He has created working together in all its amazing complexity.

As you have opportunity to experience the beauty of creation today, remember that “in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). May the recognition of Jesus’s central role in both creating and sustaining the universe result in a joyful heart and a response of praise as we acknowledge His ongoing provision for us.
