Êtes-vous bien informé ?

Dieu nous a parlé dans le Fils, qu'il a établi héritier de tout, par qui aussi il a fait les mondes. Lui, le resplendissement de sa gloire et l'empreinte de ce qu'il est, il soutient tout par la parole de sa puissance. Hébreux 1. 1-3
 

Avec l'arrivée d'internet et du smartphone, nous avons maintenant dans la poche accès à toutes les informations que nous voulons. Enfin, presque, car ces moyens d'information ne répondent pas à notre question de fond : “À quoi sert ma vie ? Pourquoi suis-je là ? ”

Celui qui croit que Dieu existe sait que son créateur a fait écrire la Bible, qui donne les réponses aux questions que nous nous posons sur le sens de notre vie. En voici quelques-unes, que nous recevons comme vraies :

– Dieu a créé l'homme pour entretenir avec lui des relations dans la confiance, l'amour, la paix et la joie (Proverbes 8. 31).

– Les hommes, créés par Dieu, refusent de le reconnaître comme leur créateur. C'est pourquoi la méchanceté, l'injustice, la haine, la violence, l'immoralité, la souffrance abondent dans le monde (Romains 1. 19-21).

– Dieu est amour : il a envoyé Jésus Christ pour pouvoir nous offrir le pardon et la vie éternelle (1 Jean 4. 9).

– Dieu fait preuve de grâce envers celui qui lui a désobéi (Ésaïe 1. 18). Quand nous croyons et nous acceptons Jésus pour notre Sauveur, Dieu nous pardonne gratuitement. C'est un effet de sa grâce. Il nous réconcilie avec lui. Il devient même notre Père.

Écoutez l'information capitale que Dieu vous donne : vous pouvez avoir le salut et la vie, aujourd'hui ! Il vous dit aussi de ne pas remettre votre décision à plus tard, car vous “ne savez pas ce qui arrivera le jour de demain (car qu'est-ce que votre vie ? – elle n'est qu'une vapeur qui paraît pour un peu de temps et puis disparaît)” (Jacques 4. 14).

Singing in the Spirit

What song has spoken to your heart recently? How can music encourage you in your relationship with God?

During the Welsh Revivals of the early twentieth century, Bible teacher and author G. Campbell Morgan described what he observed. He believed the presence of God’s Holy Spirit was moving on “billowing waves of sacred song.” Morgan wrote that he had seen the unifying influence of music in meetings that encouraged voluntary prayers, confession, and spontaneous singing. If someone got carried away by their feelings and prayed too long, or spoke in a way that didn’t resonate with others, someone would begin to softly sing. Others would gently join in, the chorus swelling in volume until drowning out all other sound.

The renewal in song that Morgan describes has its story in the Scriptures, where music plays a prominent role. Music was used to celebrate victories (Exodus 15:1–21); in worshipful dedication of the temple (2 Chronicles 5:12–14); and as a part of military strategy (20:21–23). At the center of the Bible we find a songbook (Psalms 1–150). And in Paul’s New Testament letter to the Ephesians we read this description of life in the Spirit: “[Speak] to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:19).

In conflict, in worship, in all of life, the music of our faith can help us find one voice. In harmonies old and new we’re renewed again and again, not by might, nor by power, but the Spirit and songs of our God.
