La communion : demeurer près du Seigneur (3)

Jean 1. 35-39 : Deux disciples suivent Jésus. Il se retourne et leur demande : «Que cherchez-vous ? » Ils lui disent : «Où demeures-tu ? » et Jésus les invite à venir près de lui. Ces deux disciples voulaient la compagnie du Seigneur pour pouvoir l'entendre, le questionner et bénéficier de son intimité.

Luc 19. 2-6 : Zachée, lui aussi, voulait connaître Jésus, il cherchait à savoir «qui il était». Il est alors monté sur un arbre au bord du chemin, et il a vu Jésus arriver. Mais surtout, il l'a entendu lui dire : «Zachée, descends vite, car il faut que je demeure aujourd'hui dans ta maison». Aussitôt, il a reçu Jésus chez lui, avec joie.

Pour nous, chrétiens, la communion avec le Seigneur, c'est effectivement «demeurer avec lui». Ainsi nous pouvons nous tenir par la foi près de lui, en le priant et en lisant sa Parole. Nous pouvons aussi rechercher la compagnie des croyants, lors de réunions chrétiennes, là où le Seigneur a promis sa présence (Matthieu 18. 20).

Mais le Seigneur est aussi avec nous, là où nous sommes, dans toutes nos situations. Il a dit : «Moi je suis avec vous tous les jours» (Matthieu 28. 20). Son Esprit nous fait éprouver sa présence, quand nous vivons en obéissant à sa Parole, quand nous “gardons” sa Parole.

Sur la terre, le Seigneur faisait la volonté de son Père et restait toujours conscient de son amour. Il nous invite à faire de même. Ainsi notre joie pourra être «complète» (Jean 15. 10, 11), notre vie reflétera quelque chose de ses caractères, et Dieu en sera honoré.

More than a Symbol

Today's Scripture & Insight : 2 Samuel 23:13-17

On the verge of making team history, University of Iowa basketball star Jordan Bohannon intentionally missed the free throw that would have broken a twenty-five-year-old school record. Why? In 1993, days after Iowa’s Chris Street had made thirty-four free throws in a row, he lost his life in a car crash. Bohannon chose to honor Street’s memory by not breaking his record.

Bohannon showed a keen awareness of things more important than his own advancement. We see similar values in the life of the young warrior David. Hiding in a cave with his ragtag army, David longed for a drink from the well in his hometown of Bethlehem, but the dreaded Philistines occupied the area (2 Samuel 23:14–15).

In a stunning act of bravery, three of David’s warriors “broke through the Philistine lines,” got the water, and brought it to David. But David couldn’t bring himself to drink it. Instead, he “poured it out before the Lord,” saying, “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” (vv. 16–17).

In a world that often rewards those who seize whatever they can grasp, how powerful acts of love and sacrifice can be! Such deeds are much more than mere symbols.
