Terre, terre, terre, écoute la parole de l'Éternel! Ainsi dit l'Éternel… Jérémie 22. 29

“Je suis l'Éternel, ton Dieu… Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant ma face” (Exode 20. 1, 3).

“Tu ne prendras pas le nom de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, en vain; car l'Éternel ne tiendra pas pour innocent celui qui aura pris son nom en vain” (v. 7).

“Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient prolongés sur la terre que l'Éternel, ton Dieu te donne. Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre. Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère. Tu ne commettras pas de vol. Tu ne diras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain. Tu ne convoiteras pas la maison de ton prochain; tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni rien qui soit à ton prochain” (v. 12-17).

“Tu ne traiteras pas mal et tu n'opprimeras pas l'étranger” (Exode 22. 21).

“Vous ne ferez pas de dieux d'argent à côté de moi, et vous ne vous ferez pas des dieux d'or” (Exode 20. 23).

“Tu ne feras pas courir de faux bruits… Tu n'iras pas après la foule, pour mal faire” (Exode 23. 1, 2).

On pourrait continuer à énumérer ce que Dieu nous commande de ne pas faire. Chacun de ces commandements concerne la reconnaissance que nous devons à celui qui nous a créés, ou le respect de notre prochain. Nous les recevons d'un Dieu qui aime sa créature. Le monde serait bien différent si l'on écoutait ces instructions! Et la Bible va plus loin, car elle nous dit aussi positivement ce que Dieu attend de nous.

Many Gifts, One Purpose

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12

We need one another in order to be what God wants us to be.

Corn, also called maize, is the staple food in my home country of Mexico. There are so many different types. You can find yellow, brown, red, and black cobs, even ones with a wonderful spotted pattern. But people in the cities usually won’t eat the spotted cobs. Restaurateur and researcher Amado Ramírez explains that they believe uniformity is a synonym of quality. Yet the spotted cobs taste good, and they make excellent tortillas.

The church of Christ is much more similar to a spotted ear of corn than to a cob of just one color. The apostle Paul used the imagery of a body to describe the church, because even though we are all one body, and we have the same God, each of us has been given a different gift. As Paul said, “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work” (1 Corinthians 12:5–6). Our diversity in the ways we help each other shows God’s generosity and creativity.

As we embrace our diversity, may we also make every effort to keep our unity in faith and purpose. Yes, we have different abilities and backgrounds. We speak different languages and come from different countries. But we have the same wonderful God, the Creator who delights in so much variety.

Father, may we make every effort to be one, respecting and valuing each other and our various gifts and talents.
