J'appartiens à Jésus

Dieu ne nous a pas donné un esprit de crainte, mais de puissance, et d'amour, et de sobre bon sens. N'aie donc pas honte du témoignage de notre Seigneur. 2 Timothée 1. 7, 8
 

Tous les quatre ans, un événement sportif captive des millions de personnes, dans le monde. Le 30 juin 2002, à Yokohama (Japon), le stade est plein: c'est la finale de la Coupe du monde de football. Sous le regard enthousiaste des spectateurs et téléspectateurs, l'équipe brésilienne est victorieuse. Les joueurs rassemblés au milieu du stade sont ovationnés, et voici que l'un d'entre eux se détache du groupe et enfile un T-shirt sur lequel on peut lire: “I belong to Jesus”, soit, en français: “J'appartiens à Jésus”.

Nous admirons le courage de cet homme qui avait tout préparé pour pouvoir parler au monde entier de sa foi en Jésus Christ. Par son moyen, Dieu a ainsi permis que ce témoignage soit donné à des millions de personnes, et lui seul en connaît les résultats.

Nous n'aurons peut-être pas tous l'occasion de donner un témoignage d'une telle ampleur. Mais, si nous appartenons à Jésus, nous sommes ses disciples, et donc tous invités à le montrer autour de nous, par nos attitudes, nos paroles, nos occupations… Que savent de notre foi nos voisins, nos collègues de travail, nos camarades? Il ne convient pas d'afficher son christianisme de manière irréfléchie. Mais il ne faut pas hésiter à rendre témoignage lorsque l'occasion se présente. L'apôtre Paul, dans le bateau qui l'emmenait prisonnier à Rome, a rendu grâces à Dieu avant de manger, devant ses 275 compagnons de voyage (Actes 27. 35-37). C'est lui aussi qui a écrit: “Je n'ai pas honte de l'évangile, car il est la puissance de Dieu pour sauver quiconque croit” (Romains 1. 16).

Light of the World

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in. Revelation 3:20

Open the door to Jesus; He is patiently waiting for you.

One of my favorite pieces of art hangs in the Keble College chapel in Oxford, England. The painting, The Light of the World by English artist William Holman Hunt, shows Jesus holding a lantern in His hand and knocking on a door to a home.

One of the intriguing aspects of the painting is that the door doesn’t have a handle. When questioned about the lack of a way to open the door, Hunt explained that he wanted to represent the imagery of Revelation 3:20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”

The apostle John’s words and the painting illustrate the kindness of Jesus. He gently knocks on the door of our souls with His offer of peace. Jesus stands and patiently waits for us to respond. He does not open the door Himself and force His way into our lives. He does not impose His will on ours. Instead, He offers to all people the gift of salvation and light to guide us.

To anyone who opens the door, He promises to enter. There are no other requirements or prerequisites.

If you hear the voice of Jesus and His gentle knock on the door of your soul, be encouraged that He patiently waits for you and will enter if you welcome Him in.

Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation and Your promise to enter when we open the door. Please help me to respond to this gift and open the door for You today.
