Et si tu t'asseyais…

Marie, s'étant assise aux pieds de Jésus, écoutait sa parole; mais Marthe était distraite par beaucoup de service… Jésus lui répondit: Marthe, Marthe, tu t'inquiètes et tu te tourmentes de beaucoup de choses; mais il n'est besoin que d'une seule, et Marie a choisi la bonne part, qui ne lui sera pas ôtée. Luc 10. 39-42
 

Aujourd'hui, Marthe reçoit un hôte de marque: Jésus vient prendre un repas chez elle. Elle s'affaire de tous côtés, va et vient dans la maison. Mais sa sœur Marie ne partage pas son agitation. Elle s'est assise aux pieds de Jésus et, captivée, elle l'écoute. Alors, Marthe s'indigne: Jésus ne pourrait-il pas dire à Marie de l'aider? La réponse de Jésus est digne de réflexion: “Tu t'inquiètes et tu te tourmentes… Marie a choisi la bonne part”.

Ce n'est pas son travail que le Seigneur reproche à Marthe, mais le souci et le tourment qu'il occasionne. Son activité la distrait, et la fait passer à côté de l'essentiel. Marie, elle, a compris que, lorsque Jésus parle, la priorité des priorités, c'est de l'écouter! Plus tard, elle accomplira son service, avec sa pleine approbation.

Ce récit contient un message très concret. Comment écoutons-nous, quand Dieu nous parle? Lui prêtons-nous seulement une oreille distraite, au milieu de nos activités? Lisons-nous la Bible à la va-vite, dans le brouhaha, ou en nous laissant distraire à tout moment par les messages et alertes de notre téléphone? Qui se permettrait d'écouter son patron d'une oreille, tout en faisant autre chose? Notre Dieu n'est-il pas digne d'une vraie écoute, paisible et attentive? Son message n'en vaut-il pas la peine?

Prenons le temps de nous arrêter, de nous asseoir et de fermer la porte, autant que possible, au monde environnant, si exigeant et sans repos. Voilà “la bonne part” à rechercher, coûte que coûte, chaque jour!

Our Sure Foundation

[The Lord] will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure. Isaiah 33:6

The Lord Himself is our strong foundation in life.

For many years, people in our city built and bought homes in areas subject to landslides. Some knew about the risk of the unstable land, while others were not told. “Forty years of warnings from geologists and city regulations created to ensure safe homebuilding” were unexplained or ignored (The Gazette, Colorado Springs, April 27, 2016). The view from many of those homes was magnificent, but the ground beneath them was a disaster in the making.

Many people in ancient Israel ignored the Lord’s warnings to turn from idols and seek Him, the true and living God. The Old Testament records the tragic results of their disobedience. Yet, with the world crumbling around them, the Lord continued reaching out to His people with a message of forgiveness and hope if they would turn to Him and follow His way.

The prophet Isaiah said, “[The Lord] will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure” (Isaiah 33:6).

Today, as in the Old Testament era, God has given us a choice about the foundation on which we will build our lives. We can follow our own desires, or we can embrace His eternal principles revealed in the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ. “On Christ, the solid rock, I stand—all other ground is sinking sand” (Edward Mote).

Father in heaven, we acknowledge You as our sure foundation. Our security and hope are in You
