Toutes sortes de prières (11)

Épaphras,… esclave du Christ Jésus,… combat toujours pour vous par ses prières, afin que vous demeuriez parfaits et bien assurés dans toute la volonté de Dieu;… il est dans un grand travail de cœur pour vous. Colossiens 4. 12, 13
 

Épaphras est appelé “esclave du Christ Jésus”. Il servait donc son Seigneur avec un entier dévouement. Et son service fidèle portait le caractère d'un combat, mais d'un combat bien particulier, qui se livrait à genoux. Ce croyant combattait par la prière, pour le bien et la santé spirituelle des croyants.
 

Contre quels adversaires combattait ce “soldat de Jésus Christ” (2 Timothée 2. 3)? Ce n'était pas une lutte physique, mais spirituelle “contre les dominateurs de ces ténèbres, contre les puissances spirituelles de méchanceté qui sont dans les lieux célestes” (Éphésiens 6. 12). Satan et ses anges sont désignés comme les adversaires invisibles qui cherchent à nuire aux croyants. C'est donc contre eux qu'Épaphras menait une véritable lutte! Il priait pour ceux que Satan attaquait par des doutes et par toutes sortes de tentations. Il était très engagé dans ces prières, c'était pour lui un “grand travail de cœur”.
 

Il ne priait pas seulement pour son entourage immédiat, mais pour des croyants de divers lieux.
 

Ce combat est à la portée de chaque chrétien, jeune ou âgé, en bonne santé ou malade, libre ou prisonnier… Épaphras lui-même a beaucoup prié, du fond d'une prison (Philémon 23).
 

La prière est souvent le moyen le plus efficace, et parfois le seul, pour venir en aide à nos frères et sœurs dans la foi, elle est aussi essentielle pour le bien de nos familles et de nos foyers (Néhémie 4. 14).

Second Chances

God gives us second chances.
 

“How can you be so kind if you don’t even know me!”
 

By making some wrong decisions, Linda had ended up in jail in a country not her own. For six years she remained in prison, and when she was set free she didn’t have anywhere to go. She thought her life was over! While her family gathered money to buy her ticket home, a kind couple offered her lodging, food, and a helping hand. Linda was so touched by their kindness that she willingly listened as they told her the good news of a God who loves her and wants to give her a second chance.

Dear Lord, thank You that You let us begin again and again.
 

Linda reminds me of Naomi, a widow in the Bible who lost her husband and two sons in a foreign land and thought her life was over (Ruth 1). However, the Lord hadn’t forgotten Naomi, and through the love of her daughter-in-law and the compassion of a godly man named Boaz, Naomi saw God’s love and was given a second chance (4:13–17).
 

The same God cares for us today. Through the love of others we can be reminded of His presence. We can see God’s grace in the helping hand of people we may not even know well. But above all, God is willing to give us a fresh start. We just need, like Linda and Naomi, to see God’s hand in our everyday lives and realize He never stops showing us His kindness.
