Un rêve terrifiant

Dieu parle une fois, et deux fois – et l'on n'y prend pas garde – dans un songe, dans une vision de nuit, quand un profond sommeil tombe sur les hommes, quand ils dorment sur leurs lits: alors il ouvre l'oreille aux hommes et scelle l'instruction qu'il leur donne. Job 33. 14-16

À l'époque du patriarche Job, il n'était pas rare que Dieu parle aux hommes au moyen de rêves. De nos jours, la Bible est largement diffusée, et Dieu se fait connaître par ce qu'il y a écrit et qu'il fait annoncer. Ces paroles divines éclairent tout notre être intérieur. Celui qui la lit y découvre l'amour de Dieu et son plan de salut pour les hommes.

Mais Dieu parle aussi de bien d'autres façons; en particulier il peut le faire par un rêve. Voilà ce qui s'est passé pour Jack C., un ami alors asservi à l'alcool et au péché.

En prison, à 59 ans, il a fait un rêve terrible. Entouré de créatures qui grondaient et hurlaient, il descendait avec beaucoup d'autres sur une pente glissante. Pris de panique, il demanda: “Où sommes-nous?” “Vous ne le savez pas? lui répondit-on. Encore cinq mètres et nous sommes en enfer.”

Terriblement angoissé, Jack cria dans son cauchemar: “Seigneur, sauve-moi!”

Il se sentit arraché à la foule et se retrouva dans son lit, tout tremblant. Le lendemain matin, ses codétenus lui demandèrent: “Qu'est-ce qui t'a pris? Tu as hurlé comme un fou!”

Il leur raconta son rêve, et ce qui lui était arrivé ensuite: il avait trouvé son Sauveur en Jésus Christ. Ils se moquèrent de lui, pensant le retrouver bientôt comme avant. Mais il fut tellement transformé tout le reste de sa vie qu'ils l'appelaient l'heureux Jack.

Life to the Full

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

Following Jesus is the way to a rich and satisfying life.

When I stopped by to visit my sister’s family, my nephews eagerly showed me their new chore system, a set of Choropoly boards. Each colorful electronic board keeps track of their chores. A job well done means the kids can hit a green button, which adds points to their “spending” account. A misdeed like leaving the back door open results in a fine being deducted from the total. Since a high-points total leads to exciting rewards such as computer time—and misdeeds deduct from that total—my nephews are now unusually motivated to do their work and to keep the door closed!

The ingenious system had me joking that I wished I had such an exciting motivational tool! But of course God has given us motivation. Rather than simply commanding obedience, Jesus has promised that a life of following Him, while costly, is also a life of abundance, “life . . . to the full” (John 10:10). Experiencing life in His kingdom is worth “one hundred times” the cost—now and eternally (Mark 10:29–30).

 
Lord, help us to remember there is great meaning in following You and that it is all so worth it.

We can rejoice in the fact that we serve a generous God, One who does not reward and punish as we deserve. He generously accepts our weakest efforts—even welcoming and rewarding latecomers to His kingdom as generously as old-timers (see Matt. 20:1–16). In light of this reality, let us joyfully serve Him today.

Lord, help us to remember there is great meaning in following You and that it is all so worth it.
