La vraie grâce de Dieu (2)

Dieu, qui est riche en miséricorde,… alors même que nous étions morts dans nos fautes, nous a vivifiés ensemble avec le Christ (c'est par la grâce que vous êtes sauvés). Éphésiens 2. 4, 5

Le Dieu de toute grâce… vous a appelés à sa gloire éternelle dans le Christ Jésus. 1 Pierre 5. 10

L'histoire de Méphibosheth, considérée hier, nous aide donc à comprendre ce qu'est la grâce divine. Elle met en valeur certaines de ses caractéristiques:

– La grâce est souveraine. Rien n'obligeait le roi David à se soucier des descendants de Saül qui l'avait haï. S'il avait laissé le petit-fils de son ennemi là où il était, cela n'aurait été que justice!

– La grâce s'adresse à ceux qui ne méritent rien, et brille d'autant plus que celui qui en bénéficie est indigne. Descendant de Saül, et boiteux, Méphibosheth n'avait aucun mérite à faire valoir devant David.

– Elle agit en pleine connaissance de cause. David n'ignorait rien des origines et du handicap de Méphibosheth. Celui-ci pouvait donc être tranquille. David savait bien qui était celui qu'il invitait à sa table!

– Elle donne gratuitement et abondamment. David fait venir Méphibosheth, le comble de biens, lui donne une place d'honneur. Et tout cela, sans contrepartie. Prétendre payer aurait été une insulte faite au roi…

– La grâce chasse la crainte, et produit la confiance. Craintif, le petit-fils de Saül se présente devant le roi. Mais il lui dit: “Ne crains pas”. Il apaise ses appréhensions et gagne sa confiance. Il reste boiteux, mais il peut s'asseoir en paix, heureux et à l'aise à la table de David.

– La grâce suscite l'adoration. Devant les bontés imméritées dont David le comble, il est émerveillé et confondu. Dans le sentiment profond de son indignité, il se prosterne et dit: “Qu'est ton serviteur, que tu aies regardé un chien mort tel que moi?”

Deep Roots

All Scripture helps us see our need of Jesus.

The sequoia tree, one of three species of redwoods, is among the world’s largest and most enduring organisms. It can grow to 300 feet in height, weigh over 2.5 million pounds (1.1 million kg), and live for 3,000 years. But the majestic sequoia owes much of its size and longevity to what lies below the surface. A twelve- to fourteen-foot-deep matting of roots, spreading over as much as an acre of earth, firmly grounds its towering height and astonishing weight.

A redwood’s expansive root system, however, is small compared to the national history, religion, and anticipation that undergird the life of Jesus. On one occasion He told a group of religious leaders that the Scriptures they loved and trusted told His story (John 5:39). In the synagogue of Nazareth He opened the scroll of Isaiah, read a description of Israel’s Messiah, and said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).

Our lives are rooted in our need of Him.

Later, after His resurrection, Jesus helped His disciples understand how the words of Moses, the prophets, and even the songs of Israel showed why it was necessary for Him to suffer, die, and rise from the dead (24:46).

What grace and grandeur—to see Jesus rooted in the history and Scriptures of a nation, and to see how extensively our own lives are rooted in our need of Him.

Father in heaven, please help us never forget that the history of Israel and the inspired words of Scripture ground us in seeing our need of Your Son.
