Phares alignés

L'entrée de certains ports maritimes n'est possible qu'au moyen des “feux d'alignement”. Ces deux phares déterminent la direction que doit suivre le bateau. Parfois, il y a même un troisième feu pour indiquer très précisément le chenal d'entrée du port. Ainsi en est-il pour le chrétien qui cherche à discerner la volonté de Dieu:

– Le premier phare est la Bible. Dieu ne conduit jamais un croyant dans un chemin contraire à ce qu'il dit dans sa Parole. La première question à se poser est donc celle-ci: “Le chemin que je me propose est-il conforme à ce que la Parole de Dieu enseigne?”

– Le deuxième phare est la conviction intérieure. Le Seigneur accorde au croyant, par son Esprit et par la prière, une certitude qui s'impose à lui, parfois progressivement. Paisible devant le Seigneur, je dois pouvoir lui demander de m'accompagner. Mais suis-je prêt à accepter de suivre la direction qu'il me montrera?

– Le troisième feu, ce sont les circonstances de la vie. Quand je vois le deuxième phare aligné avec le premier, je peux avancer car deux points alignés devraient me suffire pour m'indiquer la direction. Cependant, Dieu intervient parfois pour m'aider à y voir clair (Juges 6. 36-40). Ces circonstances ne sont pas mon guide, mais Dieu peut les utiliser pour m'encourager ou m'avertir.

Mais, attention! N'essayons pas d'inverser les phares: un bateau qui voudrait passer près du troisième phare avant d'avoir aligné sa trajectoire sur les deux premiers ne trouverait pas le chenal du port!

Consider the Clouds

Do you know how the clouds hang poised? Job 37:16

Creation is filled with signs that point to the Creator.

One day many years ago my boys and I were lying on our backs in the yard watching the clouds drift by. “Dad,” one asked, “why do clouds float?” “Well, son,” I began, intending to give him the benefit of my vast knowledge, but then I lapsed into silence. “I don’t know,” I admitted, “but I’ll find out for you.”

The answer, I discovered, is that condensed moisture, descending by gravity, meets warmer temperatures rising from the land. That moisture then changes into vapor and ascends back into the air. That’s a natural explanation for the phenomenon.

We are amazed at You, wonderful Creator, as we look at Your world. We praise you!

But natural explanations are not final answers. Clouds float because God in His wisdom has ordered the natural laws in such a way that they reveal the “wonders of him who has perfect knowledge” (Job 37:16). Clouds then can be thought of as a symbol—an outward and visible sign of God’s goodness and grace in creation.

So someday when you’re taking some time to see what images you can imagine in the clouds, remember this: The One who made all things beautiful makes the clouds float through the air. He does so to call us to wonder and adoration. The heavens—even the cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds—declare the glory of God.

We are amazed at You, wonderful Creator, as we look at Your world. You deserve all the praise our hearts can give and so much more!
