Vraie beauté

Il n'a ni forme, ni éclat; quand nous le voyons, il n'y a pas d'apparence en lui pour nous le faire désirer. Ésaïe 53. 2

Tu es plus beau que les fils des hommes; la grâce est répandue sur tes lèvres: c'est pourquoi Dieu t'a béni à toujours. Psaume 45. 2

Aujourd'hui ce sont les plus belles stars qui font la une des magazines. Ce sont aussi les hommes aux brillantes carrières qui monopolisent l'attention. Notre société se montre souvent méprisante, parfois même cruelle, pour les personnes faibles, défavorisées, handicapées.

La vraie beauté des êtres humains vient de l'intérieur. Il ne s'agit pas de ce qui paraît, mais de ce qui est, réellement.

La Bible nous dit: “L'Éternel ne regarde pas ce à quoi l'homme regarde, car l'homme regarde à l'apparence extérieure, et l'Éternel regarde au cœur” (1 Samuel 16. 7).

La suprême beauté se trouve en Jésus Christ, le Fils de Dieu qui s'est fait homme pour venir nous délivrer du péché. Son apparence était humble, il était pauvre au milieu des pauvres, et son peuple ne l'a pas reçu. Mais il nous a montré ce qui plaît à Dieu. Il a mis en évidence l'amour pur, la grâce, la compassion pour tous ceux qu'il rencontrait. En même temps il disait la vérité, “il n'y avait pas de fraude dans sa bouche” (Ésaïe 53. 9). Et pourtant, il a été méprisé, haï, mis à mort par les hommes. S'il est mort, c'est qu'il “nous a aimés et s'est livré lui-même pour nous” (Éphésiens 5. 2), lui, le juste, pour des injustes, pour sauver ceux qui croient en lui. Sa bonté dépasse tout, à l'égal de sa beauté, comme l'avait annoncé le prophète: “Combien grande est sa bonté! et combien grande est sa beauté!” (Zacharie 9. 17).

God’s Face

For God . . . made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6

God’s love for us is as expansive as the open arms of Christ on the cross.

Much of my career as a writer has revolved around the problem of pain. I return again and again to the same questions, as if fingering an old wound that never quite heals. I hear from readers of my books, and their anguished stories give human faces to my doubts. I remember a youth pastor calling me after he had learned that his wife and baby daughter were dying of AIDS because of a tainted blood transfusion. “How can I talk to my youth group about a loving God?” he asked.

I have learned to not even attempt an answer to these “why” questions. Why did the youth pastor’s wife happen to get the one tainted bottle of blood? Why does a tornado hit one town and skip over another? Why do prayers for physical healing go unanswered?

For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:5

One question, however, no longer gnaws at me as it once did: “Does God care?” I know of only one way to answer that question, and the answer is Jesus. In Jesus, God gave us a face. If you wonder how God feels about the suffering on this groaning planet, look at that face.

“Does God care?” His Son’s death on our behalf, which will ultimately destroy all pain, sorrow, suffering, and death for eternity, answers that question. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6).
