Pourquoi Dieu pardonne

Si nous confessons nos péchés, [Dieu] est fidèle et juste pour nous pardonner nos péchés et nous purifier de toute iniquité. 1 Jean 1. 9

Repentez-vous et croyez à l'évangile. Marc 1. 15

“Faute avouée est à moitié pardonnée”, dit-on parfois pour encourager le coupable à se dénoncer. En effet, la crainte de la punition rend souvent l'aveu difficile. Mais il n'est pas question, dans ce dicton, de regret ou de repentir. Il s'agit plutôt d'atténuer les conséquences de sa faute. Ce n'est pas ainsi que nous pouvons nous approcher de Dieu.

Dans ce récit de Luc 15, le fils indigne a quitté la maison pour une vie de débauche, puis il a compris la gravité de son état. Alors, conscient d'avoir mal agi, il décide de revenir vers son père. Mais avant d'avoir pu se présenter devant lui, il voit son père venir à sa rencontre, ému de compassion.

Il en est toujours ainsi avec Dieu. Pour celui qui a une attitude sincère de confession et de repentance, Dieu devient Celui qui pardonne et qui justifie. “Je t'ai fait connaître mon péché… et toi, tu as pardonné” (Psaume 32. 5).

Le pardon entier et définitif de Dieu suit notre confession. Dieu est amour, et il fait grâce à celui qui reconnaît qu'il a péché. Dieu est juste et saint. Et son pardon s'exerce avec justice parce que Jésus Christ a expié à la croix les péchés de tous ceux qui croient en lui. Il en a subi le jugement à notre place. Dieu ne s'en souviendra plus (Hébreux 8. 12). Voilà la grâce immense du Dieu d'amour à l'égard de chacun de nous si nous nous repentons en nous tournant vers Jésus.

Someone to Celebrate

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Psalm 95:6

When we find Christ we offer our worship.

Many manger scenes depict the wise men, or magi, visiting Jesus in Bethlehem at the same time as the shepherds. But according to the gospel of Matthew, the only place in Scripture where their story is found, the magi showed up later. Jesus was no longer in the manger in a stable at the inn, but in a house. Matthew 2:11 tells us, “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”

Realizing that the magi’s visit happened later than we may think provides a helpful reminder as we begin a new year. Jesus is always worthy of worship. When the holidays are past and we head back to life’s everyday routines, we still have Someone to celebrate.

Jesus Christ is Immanuel, “God with us” (Matt. 1:23), in every season. He has promised to be with us “always” (28:20). Because He is always with us, we can worship Him in our hearts every day and trust that He will show Himself faithful in the years to come. Just as the magi sought Him, may we seek Him too and worship Him wherever we are.

Lord Jesus, just as the magi sought You and bowed before You as the coming King, help me to yield my will to You and to follow where You lead.
