Crises (1): La rencontre

Étant tombé à terre, il entendit une voix qui lui disait: Saul! Saul! pourquoi me persécutes-tu? – Qui es-tu, Seigneur? demanda-t-il. – Je suis Jésus que tu persécutes. Actes 9. 4, 5

– L'exemple (Actes 9. 1-22): Saul (le futur apôtre Paul) était un adversaire des chrétiens, particulièrement acharné. Il était, comme il le dira plus tard, “un blasphémateur, un persécuteur et un violent”, le “premier” des pécheurs (1 Timothée 1. 13, 15). Un jour, il se rendait à Damas, en Syrie, pour arrêter les chrétiens. Mais sur la route, en plein midi, il est soudain aveuglé par une clarté éblouissante. Jeté à terre, il apprend que Celui qui l'interpelle du haut de la gloire est Jésus… qu'il persécute en s'attaquant à ses disciples!

– La leçon: La conversion de Saul est exceptionnelle, impressionnante! Mais elle est un exemple de celle de tous les croyants (1 Timothée 1. 16). Est-ce que j'ai moi-même fait cette rencontre avec le Seigneur? Elle n'a peut-être pas été aussi spectaculaire; pourtant, si je suis un vrai croyant, j'ai dû un jour m'incliner devant Jésus Christ vivant, et l'écouter me parler personnellement.

Cette rencontre décisive se produit souvent en lisant la Bible, en écoutant un message, en parlant avec un croyant… Alors je comprends, je crois: Jésus Christ est bien vivant! Il n'est plus celui qu'on a vu mort sur la croix, il est le Seigneur dans le ciel, celui qui a toute l'autorité. Il est aussi le chef de la foi, dans le ciel, mais uni à chacun des croyants sur la terre.

Dès sa rencontre avec le Seigneur, Saul lui a parlé. Moi aussi, si j'ai cru, je peux lui parler, le prier, et lui dire: “Seigneur Jésus”!

Breath of Life

Then the Lord God . . . breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Genesis 2:7

Give thanks to God, our Creator, who gives us the breath of life.

On a cold and frosty morning, as my daughter and I walked to school, we enjoyed seeing our breath turn to vapor. We giggled at the various steamy clouds we could each produce. I received the moment as a gift, reveling in being with her and being alive.

Our breath, which is usually invisible, was seen in the cold air, and it made me think about the Source of our breath and life—the Lord our Creator. For He who formed Adam out of the dust of the ground, giving him the breath of life, also gives life to us and to every living creature (Gen. 2:7). All things come from Him—even our very breath, which we inhale without even thinking about.

Jesus, we praise You and stand in awe of You.

We may be tempted, living with today’s conveniences and technology, to forget our beginnings and that God is the one who gives us life. But when we pause to remember that God is our Creator, we can build an attitude of thankfulness into our daily routines. We can ask Him for help and acknowledge the gift of life with humble, thankful hearts. May our gratitude spill out and touch others, so that they also may give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and faithfulness.

Dear heavenly Father, what an awesome and powerful God You are! You created life by Your very breath. We praise You and stand in awe of You. Thank You for Your creation.
