Rien qu'aujourd'hui

Aujourd'hui, si vous entendez sa voix, n'endurcissez pas votre cœur. Psaume 95. 7, 8

Ma vie n'est qu'un instant, une heure passagère,
Ma vie n'est qu'un seul jour qui m'échappe et qui fuit.
Tu le sais, ô mon Dieu! pour t'aimer sur la terre
Je n'ai rien qu'aujourd'hui.

Aujourd'hui, c'est le mot de la grâce. “Descends vite, car il faut que je demeure aujourd'hui dans ta maison”, a dit Jésus à Zachée, qui l'a reçu avec joie (Luc 19. 5, 6). Cette invitation de Jésus à le connaître et avoir une relation avec lui s'adresse encore à chacun. Aujourd'hui il veut entrer en contact avec nous, se révéler comme le Sauveur, celui qui nous sauve du mal et nous libère de toute culpabilité. Et si je suis croyant, aujourd'hui c'est le temps où Jésus veut comme “souper avec moi” (Apocalypse 3. 20), c'est-à­dire me faire éprouver la joie de sa présence. C'est aussi aujourd'hui que Jésus a quelque chose à me dire. Lui seul connaît mon cœur, et quand il me sollicite c'est le moment d'écouter sa voix, de me laisser pénétrer par son message et de lui obéir joyeusement en le servant. “Mon enfant, va aujourd'hui travailler dans ma vigne” (Matthieu 21. 28).

Aujourd'hui le Sauveur passe;
Ne compte pas sur demain.
Aujourd'hui c'est jour de grâce:
Regarde, il te tend la main.
 

Le temps fuit, l'heure s'envole,
Ouvre ton cœur à Jésus,
Obéis à sa parole;
Hâte-toi, ne tarde plus!

Constant Kindness

Be kind and compassionate to one another. Ephesians 4:32

When I was a child I was an ardent reader of L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz books. I recently came across Rinkitink in Oz with all the original artwork. I laughed again at the antics of Baum's irrepressible, good-hearted King Rinkitink with his down-to-earth goodness. Young Prince Inga described him best: “His heart is kind and gentle and that is far better than being wise."

How simple and how sensible! Yet who has not wounded the heart of someone dear to us by a harsh word? By doing so, we disturb the peace and quiet of the hour and we can undo much of the good we have done toward those we love. "A small unkindness is a great offense,” said Hannah More, an 18th-century English writer.

Be kind and compassionate to one another. Ephesians 4:32

Here’s the good news: Anyone can become kind. We may be incapable of preaching an inspiring sermon, fielding hard questions, or evangelizing vast numbers, but we can all be kind.

How? Through prayer. It is the only way to soften our hearts. “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil [or harsh]” (Ps. 141:3–4).

In a world in which love has grown cold, a kindness that comes from the heart of God is one of the most helpful and healing things we can offer to others.

Forgive me, Lord, when I bring anger into a situation. Soften my heart and help me use my words to encourage others.
